Job Opportunity: Pediatric Critical Care Float Pool Registered Nurse

Location: Charleston, South Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Description

  • Position: Pediatric Critical Care float pool RN
  • Shift: 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 AM - 7:30 PM), totaling 36 hours/week
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend plus holiday rotation
  • Patient Ratios: 1:2 or 1:3
  • Float: RN will float within scope to all Pediatric units including CVPICU, NICU, PICU
  • Local Radius: 60 miles
  • Locals Accepted: Yes, on a case-by-case basis

Experience Requirements

  • Minimum 2 years of Pediatric ICU experience (highest required years of experience)
  • First-time travelers accepted if they meet experience requirements
  • Prior travel experience: Not explicitly required

Licensure & Certifications

  • RN License: South Carolina or Multi-State/Compact State RN License required
  • Certifications required (American Heart Association - AHA only):
    • BLS (Basic Life Support)
    • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
  • Certifications preferred: ECMO, CRRT experience preferred but not required
  • Additional certifications that may be required or preferred depending on unit:
    • ACLS (not required for pediatric units)
    • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
    • TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course) - not required for ER RNs
    • EFM (Electronic Fetal Monitoring) - not required for NICU
  • Certification expiration: Must be valid beyond 30 days from start date

Scheduling & Work Conditions

  • Block scheduling may be accommodated with manager approval, dependent on unit needs
  • Facility may call off 1 shift every 2 weeks
  • Hurricane Season (June - November): Travelers may be assigned to emergency response teams during this period; consider before accepting assignment

Required Documentation & Compliance

  • Background checks including:
    • SSN Trace
    • County and state criminal checks (7 years)
    • Sex Offender Registry
    • National Criminal and FACIS 3
    • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 30 days of start and updated for renewals
  • Education verification and diploma/transcripts preferred
  • Primary source license verification required
  • NURSYS verification for RN licenses
  • Drug screening: 10-panel drug screen within 90 days of start (no instant tests)
  • Physical exam: Initial and updated annually, attesting ability to meet physical demands
  • Fit mask test: N95 fit test within 90 days prior to start, renewed annually
  • Immunizations and health requirements:
    • Tdap within 10 years or declination form
    • Negative TB test (T-spot or Q-Gold) within 90 days or proof of prior positive with follow-up chest x-ray
    • Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella: Positive titer or vaccination series with boosters as needed
    • Hepatitis B: Titer, vaccine series, or declination required
    • Flu vaccine required during flu season (Aug 1 - Apr 30), medical/religious exemptions accepted but no declinations
    • COVID vaccines highly preferred; declination form required if not vaccinated
  • Annual TB questionnaire required
  • Color blind testing required prior to start
  • Competency exams and medication/pharmacology tests required as applicable
  • Facility-specific orientation modules must be completed prior to start (approx. 2 hours)
  • Clear, passport-style badge photo required before start

Additional Notes

  • References: Proof of 2 clinical references or hospital evaluations required
  • Employment application must include all PTO, contract assignments, agency names, and no unaccounted gaps
  • Work history verification of last 3 clinical employers required
  • Radiation badge required only for specific units (not applicable for this pediatric float pool role)

This position offers an opportunity to work in a specialized pediatric critical care environment with a supportive float pool role across multiple pediatric intensive care units. Candidates must meet licensure, certification, and health compliance requirements and be prepared for potential emergency assignments during hurricane season.
