Job Description
- Float position covering multiple units:
- ICU Step Down (HICU)
- Brain Health Unit (BHU)
- Burk 2 (Long-Term Care Ventilator Unit)
- Units and staffing ratios:
- HICU: 1:5-7 (based on patient acuity and staffing)
- BHU: 1:10-12
- Burk 2: 1:17-20
- Patient population includes:
- Critically ill patients requiring close monitoring and frequent interventions
- Patients needing ICU step down, telemetry, med/surg level care
- Patients with acute and chronic disorders such as post cardiac arrest, pneumonia, sepsis, respiratory failure, CVA rehabilitation, cardiac, renal, GI/GU conditions
- Patients with specialty equipment: G-tubes, PICC lines, chest tubes, High Flow Nasal Cannula, tracheostomies, mechanical ventilation
- Blood transfusions and management of non-titratable drips may be required
- BHU: 60 beds, medical and neurological diagnoses, average stay 20-25 days, includes medication management, rehabilitation, and patient engagement activities
- Burk 2: 18-23 beds, long-term care for chronic respiratory problems, ventilator support, requires strong organizational and leadership skills, special training for ventilator care and alarm response
Requirements
- Minimum 2 years of Registered Nurse experience (highest required)
- Prior travel experience not required (1st time travelers accepted)
- Certifications required:
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- Work schedule includes every other weekend
Compliance and Documentation Requirements
- Background check within 6 months covering all locations lived/worked in past 7 years
- Government-issued photo ID (driver’s license or state ID)
- I9 and E-Verify documentation
- Education verification and accreditation confirmation (must verify nursing education program approval)
- State nursing license verification (primary source verification required)
- NURSYS verification for RNs
- Physical exam within 1 year confirming ability to meet essential job functions
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year
- Drug screening (9 panel) within 30 days of start
- Immunizations and health documentation:
- MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) with boosters if needed
- Hepatitis B titer, series, or signed declination
- Varicella vaccination or positive titer
- Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption (required during flu season)
- Respirator fit test (completed onsite)
- Competency exams including medication test/pharmacology and unit-specific skills checklist
- EKG/Dysrhythmia competency exam (time sensitive, must pass within allowed attempts)
- Stroke and Trauma CEUs as required (annual updates)
- Pass/Fail testing acknowledgment for EKG/medication exams
- Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) certification if required by unit
- Signed policies for floating and time & attendance for contracted staff
- Photo for badge and parking registration prior to start
- ReadySet account setup and OSHA respirator fit test survey completion prior to start
Additional Notes
- Staffing ratios and patient acuity vary by unit floated to
- Special training required for ventilator care and alarm response on Burk 2 unit
- Candidate must be flexible to float between units as needed
- Strong organizational and leadership skills are essential for long-term care ventilator unit
- References and employment verification required (2 professional references within 2 years preferred)
This position offers a diverse clinical experience across ICU step down, brain health, and long-term ventilator care units in a well-established healthcare system. It is suitable for RNs with at least 2 years of experience who are comfortable floating between units and managing complex patient populations.
