Job Opportunity: Med Surg Nurse (Telemetry Unit)

Position Details

• Specialty: Nursing Administration / Med Surg Telemetry

Unit Information

• Unit Beds: 16 (usually full census)
• Patient Population: Adults only
• Patient Types / Common Diagnoses:

  • Cardiothoracic: post-cath, post-Watchman, post-TAVRs, robotic assisted thoracotomies (straight to floor), chest pain, ACS, CHF, MIs, new onset a-fib, arrhythmias
  • Medical: post-bariatric surgeries, peritoneal dialysis (experience not required), COPD, GI bleeds, infections
  • EEG monitoring for stable seizure patients (3 rooms)

Experience Requirements

• Minimum Specialty Experience: 2 years Telemetry experience
• Prior Travel Experience: Not preferred but exceptions made for strong cardiac candidates (prior travel experience not explicitly required)

Licenses and Certifications

• BLS (Basic Life Support)
• ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)

Skills and Competencies

• Experience with listed patient types; manager approval required if lacking proficiency in some areas
• Ability to interpret cardiac rhythms, TR bands, post-cath femoral monitoring (no sheaths)
• IV starts, Foley catheter insertion and care, NG tubes, wound care
• Ability to initiate Tikosyn therapy
• Experience with non-titrating drips: Amiodarone, Cardizem, Nitro, Heparin (required)
• EPIC electronic medical record system experience required

Patient Ratios

• Day shift: 1 nurse to 4 patients
• Night shift: 1 nurse to 5-6 patients

Department Support

• CNAs: 3 on days, 2 on nights (also perform HUC duties)
• Charge nurse (takes full patient assignment)
• Phlebotomy available 24/7
• Resource nurse available 24/7
• SWAT RN available 24/7 for patient assessment
• Respiratory Therapist available 24/7
• Hospitalist and Intensivist coverage 24/7
• Remote Telemetry Technicians for rhythm strip monitoring and alerts
• EPIC Rover phone for communication

Technology and Equipment

• EMR: EPIC (required)
• IV Pump: Alaris
• Medication Dispensing: Pyxis
• Bedside Monitors: GE with alarms

Floating

• May float within scope of practice at this facility
• Possible float to PCU/ICU for telemetry patients only

Orientation

• New Employee Orientation (NEO)
• 1 shift on unit; additional shifts possible if needed

Scheduling

• Weekend rotation: Every other weekend or less, depending on unit needs
• On-call: May be required to work 1 contingency shift every 6 weeks (extra shift only if needed)
• Holiday coverage: 50% of holidays required
• Request time off (RTO) approval: up to 7 days allowed
• Shift times: 0700-1930 (day), 1900-0730 (night)
• Schedule cycles made in 6-week increments; may fill gaps or accommodate block scheduling (no guarantee)
