Location & Facility Overview

• Level IV Trauma Center
• Level III NICU
• Advanced Comprehensive Stroke Center
• Teaching hospital with 228 beds
• COVID-19 vaccine required

Unit Information

• 29 beds on the unit
• Patient population:

  • Half acute care for older adults (>65) with conditions such as dementia, stroke, delirium, diabetes, kidney/liver/heart failure, respiratory issues, cardiac dysrhythmia
  • Half observation patients admitted for 24 hours or less (faster paced)

Experience Requirements

• 1 to 3 years of nursing experience required
• First-time travelers considered upon review
• Prior travel experience: Not explicitly required

Patient Ratios

• Day shift: 1 nurse to 5 patients
• Night shift: 1 nurse to 6-7 patients

Required Certifications

• BLS (Basic Life Support)
• NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)

Skills & Competencies

• Medical-Surgical Unit (MSU) skillset
• Experience with older adult patients
• Wound care
• Insulin drip management
• Management of tachycardia (tachs), chest tubes, nasogastric tubes (NGT), PEG tubes
• Ability to read and interpret cardiac strips (preferred)

Unit Support

• Receptionist available during days and evenings
• CNA support: 1:6 ratio during day, 1:8 at night
• Modified charge nurse support
• Respiratory Therapist (RT) available 24/7
• Hospitalist available 24/7
• Occupational Therapy (OT), Physical Therapy (PT), Speech Therapy (ST) available
• Security system in place for patients at risk of elopement

Technology & Equipment

• EPIC electronic health record system
• Alaris infusion pumps
• Pyxis medication dispensing system
• Centralized and nurse station telemetry with Tele Tech support

Floating & Orientation

• Floating to other MSUs or ICU for MSU overflow is rare and traveler is floated first
• Orientation details not specified

Scheduling & Time Off

• Weekend rotation based on need, possibly every other weekend
• No on-call requirements
