Job Opportunity: ICU Registered Nurse (RN)

Location: Bay City, Texas
Contract Length: 13 weeks

Job Details

• Specialty: ICU RN
• Shift: 12-hour shifts (7 AM - 7 PM), 5 on/5 off, 2 on/2 off matrix
• Schedule: 36/48 rotating schedule
• Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
• Holiday Requirement: Every other holiday
• Patient Ratio:

  • 2:1 standard
  • 3:1 for low acuity (stepdown)
  • 1:1 for high acuity
• Beds: 6 ICU beds
• Charge Nurse: Yes, expected to take a patient load
• Nurse Aides: None unless needed for 1:1 care
• Floating: MedSurg or ER depending on traveler experience
• Orientation: 2 days floor-specific orientation

Patient Population / Common Diagnoses

• Atrial Fibrillation (Afib), Rapid Ventricular Response (RVR)
• Sepsis
• Respiratory failure
• Severe anemia
• GI bleeds
• Lower acuity trauma patients
• Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA)
• Fresh total joint replacements

Equipment / Technology

• EMR: Meditech
• Ventilators: Puritan Bennett 840
• Drips: Cardiac meds, sedation meds, antiarrhythmics, Sandostatin, insulin
• Respiratory Therapy: Available 6 AM - 9 PM, then on-call; nurses must be able to intervene if patient deteriorates
• IV Team: No, but PICC team available if needed
• Pharmacy: 6 AM - 9 PM; house supervisor mixes meds after hours, pharmacist on call

Required Certifications & Qualifications

• Current RN license in Texas
• ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
• BLS (Basic Life Support)
• PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) MUST HAVE PALS in hand to start
• TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course)
• Prefer NIHSS certification
• Prefer 2-3 years ICU experience (minimum 2-3 years recommended)
• Must be very competent with ventilators or capable of being educated on them

Additional Information

• No block scheduling
• Limited Return to Origin (RTO)
• Nurses expected to monitor their own patients (no tele/monitor techs)
• Hospitalist coverage 12 hours/day with ER doctor in-house 24/7
• Charge nurse role includes patient load
• Health education/testing modules required prior to start; time logged and monitored
• All ICU patients are managed on one unit; major medical issues are transferred out except stroke patients (TPA administered in-house)
