Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (RN) – 4N Ortho-Neuro

Location: Parkersburg, West Virginia
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Unit Overview

  • Unit: 4N Ortho - Neuro (33 beds, all private rooms)
  • Patient Ratios: 1 RN to 6 patients
  • Common Diagnoses/Patient Types: Elective surgeries (hips, knees, shoulders), fractures from falls, back & neck neuro-surgeries, general MedSurg patients
  • EPIC experience required

Schedule & Staffing

  • Shifts: 12-hour shifts (0700-1930; 1900-0730) with a 30-minute lunch break
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend (Night shifts Fri/Sat/Sun; Day shifts Sat/Sun)
  • Holiday Requirement: Based on unit needs; travelers may be expected to work holidays if permanent staff coverage is insufficient
  • Floating: Required; travelers float first to MedSurg units and may float to Tele with patients within skillset
  • Call/Standby: Possible call-off for low census depending on contract specifics

Required Qualifications

  • Current RN license in West Virginia or compact license
  • BLS (AHA) certification
  • Experience with ortho patients and PCA pumps
  • EPIC experience
  • Must submit an unexpired driver’s license copy

Clinical Details

  • RNs do not titrate drips
  • Common drips: IV fluids and PCA pumps only (no heparin or other drips)
  • Patient Care Techs assist with vitals, FSBS, ADLs, and Foley catheter discontinuation
  • Respiratory Therapy manages CPAP, BiPAP, and High Flow oxygen equipment
  • Remote telemetry monitoring available; RNs do not read telemetry strips

Orientation

  • 1 day EPIC orientation
  • 1 day floor orientation with preceptor
  • 3rd day working independently

Dress Code

  • Royal blue scrubs required
  • Scrub jackets allowed only if royal blue; no hoodies or sweatshirts

Additional Notes

  • Travelers are scheduled where needed but block scheduling may be allowed if unit needs are met
  • Time-off requests should be noted during prescreening
  • No charge nurse or house supervisor responsibilities for travelers; charge nurse available 24/7
