Job Opportunity: Oncology Chemo Certified Registered Nurse
Location: Columbus, Ohio
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 16 weeks
Job Description
- Work on a Hematology Oncology Med Surg Unit with a focus on Adolescent and Young Adult (AYA) patients.
- Rotating 12-hour day/night shifts; schedule reviewed every 4 weeks but subject to change based on staffing needs.
- Staffing ratios goal: 1:4 (can be 1:5).
- Floating to other Med/Surg and Oncology units as needed.
- Orientation:
- Week 1: Monday-Friday day shift orientation.
- Week 2: 36 hours on-unit orientation with a preceptor.
Patient Diagnoses
- Lymphoma
- Multiple Myeloma
- Acute and Chronic Leukemias
- Sickle Cell Disease
- Other non-hematologic cancers and benign hematology conditions
Special Procedures / Unit Details
- Chemotherapy administration
- Blood transfusions
- IV antibiotics
- Management of oncologic emergencies (tumor lysis syndrome, cytokine release syndrome)
- Insulin and heparin drips
- Strong emphasis on infection prevention and patient fall prevention
Required Certifications
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
- ONS (Oncology Nursing Society) Certification
Required Skills and Competencies
- Medical-Surgical and Telemetry nursing experience
- Telemetry monitoring and dysrhythmia interpretation
- Use of Rapid Response Teams
- Feeding tube care and management
- IV therapy and phlebotomy skills including:
- Blood product administration
- Central line blood draws
- Peripheral line and PICC line care/management
- Starting IVs
- Experience with computerized charting systems (EPIC)
Required Experience
- Specialty: Registered Nurse in Oncology or Med Surg with chemotherapy experience
- Minimum years of specialty experience: Not explicitly stated; assume at least 2 years based on typical oncology travel nurse requirements and certification needs.
- Prior travel experience is NOT explicitly required.
Background and Compliance Requirements
- 7-year criminal background check including FBI and BCI fingerprinting (Ohio-specific code 3701.881) required prior to start.
- Education verification from an accredited nursing program (CCNE, ACEN, or NLN CNEA).
- Monthly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG monitoring.
- Drug screening: Negative 10-panel drug screen within 3 months of start (includes amphetamines, benzodiazepines, THC, cocaine, opiates, etc.).
- Physical exam within 1 year of start confirming good health and free of contagious disease.
- Immunizations and health documents required:
- Tdap vaccine (adult dose)
- Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year
- TB questionnaire
- MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) vaccination or positive titers
- Hepatitis B titer or vaccine series (declination acceptable)
- Varicella vaccination or positive titer (medical exemptions reviewed)
- Seasonal flu vaccine or declination during flu season (10/1 - 3/31)
- Drug testing and immunization requirements apply to clinical staff; remote workers may have exceptions.
Additional Requirements
- Completion of unit-specific competency exams including:
- Medication/pharmacology competency exam
- Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam (must be current within 1 year and renewed annually)
- Orientation safety manual acknowledgement annually.
- State license verification and NURSYS verification for RNs.
- References: Two professional references required, including at least one from a manager or formal leadership.
- Employment application and skills checklist required.
Work Environment and Scheduling
- No set/blocked scheduling; self-scheduling requests are submitted and balanced by management.
- Weekend shifts variable based on unit needs.
- Floating to other units within Med/Surg and Oncology.
This position is ideal for experienced oncology RNs with chemotherapy certification who are comfortable working in a fast-paced hematology/oncology med-surg environment and have strong telemetry and IV therapy skills.
