Job Opportunity: Med Surg/Telemetry RN

Location: Quincy, Illinois
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Summary

Seeking a Med Surg Float RN for a 13-week contract in a busy inpatient surgical unit. The unit primarily cares for patients on Med Surg/Telemetry with a focus on surgical cases.


Unit Details

  • Unit: Med Surg/Telemetry, Inpatient Surgical (3rd floor)
  • Beds: 48 (across two buildings)
  • Nurse-to-Patient Ratios:
    • Days: 1:4-6
    • Nights: 1:5-6 with LPN support and virtual admission/discharge nurses
  • Primary care nursing model frequently used
  • Tele monitor tech present; RNs interpret strips (Draeger monitors)
  • Nurse aides available but may be pulled for sitter duties, especially nights
  • Respiratory Therapy manages CPAP, BiPAP occasionally on unit

Required Certifications & Skills

  • BLS (AHA)
  • NIHSS
  • EPIC experience required (conversion planned for Q2 2026)

Experience Requirements

  • Minimum 1 year surgical nursing experience required
  • Must have total joint replacement experience (hips/knees)
  • Experience with:
    • PCA pumps
    • Reversal drugs (Narcan)
    • Sepsis management
    • TPN and lipids administration
    • Narcotic usage
  • RN required to titrate heparin drips per protocol

Common Patient Diagnoses & Procedures

  • Neuro surgeries: laminectomy, cervical fusion
  • Orthopedic surgeries: total joint replacements (hips/knees)
  • Abdominal surgeries: ostomies, hernia repair
  • Vascular procedures: fem-pop bypass
  • Dialysis catheter insertions (dialysis unit located on same floor)
  • Amputations: BKA, AKA
  • Management of PCA, epidurals, IV antibiotics, chronic pain, sepsis, urgent OR admits

Scheduling & Work Environment

  • Shifts: 3x 12-hour shifts starting at 7 AM
  • Weekend requirement: every other weekend (Saturday and Sunday)
  • Holiday rotation with core staff
  • No call or standby requirements
  • Floating: float only to like units; if floated to higher acuity, work as support without patient load
  • Orientation: 1-12 hour shift on unit of hire plus a 12-14 hour first day for orientation and computer modules
  • Dress code: black scrubs

Additional Notes

  • Fast-paced environment with heavy patient load
  • Can admit 8-12 surgical patients per day plus discharges
  • Night shifts are 12 hours
  • Block scheduling not guaranteed but schedules are posted 6 weeks in advance

Required Qualifications

  • Registered Nurse (RN) license in Illinois
  • Minimum 1 year surgical nursing experience (Med Surg/Telemetry focus)
  • BLS and NIHSS certifications
  • EPIC electronic health record experience
