Job Description
- Float to different Medical-Surgical (MS) units throughout the hospital, including:
- MS 1 General Surgical (18 beds)
- MS 2 Cardiac Neuro (18 beds)
- MS 3 Oncology (18 beds)
- MS 4 Ortho (16 beds)
- 3W Cardiac Tele (16 beds)
- Surgical Surge Unit (14 beds)
- ED Holding
- Provide care within RN scope; when floating to ICUs, assist as helping hands, taskers, or runners without patient assignments or medication administration.
- Less than 24-hour turnaround time for assignments.
- Weekend rotation every other weekend.
- 6-week schedule provided 1-2 weeks in advance.
- Shift: 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM.
- Holiday expectation: every other holiday based on start date.
Patient Types
- MS 1 General Surgical: SBO, hemicolectomy, thyroidectomy, prostatectomy, mastectomy, pneumonia, COVID, respiratory issues, sepsis, cellulitis, IV drug abuse, BiPAP, CPAP, nitric oxide, cardiac/neuro overflow, Cardizem drip.
- MS 2 Cardiac Neuro: Cardiac telemetry (post cath, CHF, A-fib), neuro (strokes, TIA, altered level of consciousness, dementia), general medical (sepsis, pneumonia, COPD, DKA, AKI).
- MS 3 Oncology: Neutropenic patients, various cancers, psychiatric, general medical (COPD, CHF, sepsis, DVT, AKI, dialysis).
- MS 4 Ortho: Post-surgical ortho (total joints, ORIF, external fixation), other post-surgical (GI, GU, GYN, ENT).
- 3W Cardiac Tele: Cardiac stepdown unit for high acuity medical, surgical, cardiac patients including post cath, 24h post open heart, SVT, A-fib, sepsis, bariatrics, CKD/HD.
- Surgical Surge Unit: Stable fresh surgical patients post phase 1 & 2 PACU (no ICU or vented patients). Includes ortho, GI, GYN, plastics, ENT surgeries.
- ED Holding: General medical patients awaiting MS bed.
Patient Ratios
- Day shift: 1 RN to 5 patients
- Night shift: 1 RN to 6 patients
Required Certifications
- Registered Nurse (RN) license
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
- NIH Stroke Scale certification
Required Experience & Skills
- Minimum 1 year nursing experience required.
- Telemetry experience required.
- Good general medical-surgical skillset.
- Cardiac rhythm interpretation.
- Drain management (JP drain, hemovac).
- Nasogastric tube (NGT) placement and management.
- Central line management (PICC).
- Continuous bladder irrigation (CBI).
- Dressing changes, wound care, wound vac management.
Support on Unit
- Charge Nurse available (Day: 1:2, Night: 1:4-5)
- Unit Secretary (7 AM – 7 PM)
- Respiratory Therapist 24/7
- Hospitalist available 24/7
- Phlebotomy: Peripheral draws; RN performs central line draws
- Centralized telemetry monitoring with telemetry technician
Charting System / Equipment
- EPIC (preferred)
- Alaris infusion pumps
- Pyxis medication dispensing system
Floating Details
- Float to MS units, Surge Overflow (LTACH patients), ED holding, Surgical Surge Unit, ICUs, and sitter assignments.
- When floating outside MS scope (e.g., ICU), RN will not take patient assignments or administer medications but will assist with tasks within scope.

- First-time travelers are welcome (no prior travel experience required).
- Scrub color: Any except camo, denim, or logos.
