Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (PCU) - Travel/Contract

Location: Columbus, Ohio
Contract Length: 16 weeks


Unit & Patient Care Information

  • Unit: Medical Oncology with progressive care beds; includes some pediatric patients (rare, pediatric experience not required)
  • Unit Type: 36-bed Oncology Telemetry unit, with 24+ beds dedicated to Progressive Care Unit (PCU) level of care
  • Patient Diagnoses: Solid Tumor, Orthopedic Oncology, Thoracic Oncology
  • Patient Acuity: High acuity PCU patients with some med-surg telemetry
  • Staffing Ratios:
    • Med Surg Telemetry: 1:4-5
    • PCU: 1:3
  • Float Requirement: Must float within units of equivalent or lower acuity

Schedule & Orientation

  • Self-scheduling requests accepted; final schedule balanced by department
  • Orientation:
    • Week 1: Monday to Friday, dayshift orientation
    • Week 2: 36 hours on-unit orientation with a preceptor
  • Shift: 12-hour day/night rotating shifts; assignments reviewed every 4 weeks but subject to staffing needs

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in Ohio
  • Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
  • Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience within the last year (minimum 1 year)
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) issued by American Heart Association
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) issued by American Heart Association
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
  • Interpretation of dysrhythmias
  • Use of rapid response teams
  • Feeding tube care and management
  • Accessing Ports
  • Blood product administration
  • Central line care and management
  • Peripheral line care and management
  • PICC line management
  • Starting IVs
  • Heparin protocols

Required Skills

  • High acuity PCU patient care experience
  • Interpretation of dysrhythmias and ABGs
  • Use of rapid response teams
  • Feeding tube care and management
  • Accessing Ports and Central line care/management
  • Blood product administration
  • Peripheral line and PICC line management
  • Starting IVs and managing heparin protocols
  • Managing cardiac drips (no titration) and titrating cardiac drips
  • PCA pump management
  • Chest tube management (Emerson/Pleur-evac)
  • External CPAP/BIPAP and High Flow Nasal Cannula (HFNC)
  • Nasal cannula and tracheostomy management

  • Continuous bladder irrigation

Background & Compliance Requirements

  • 7-year criminal background check (including FBI/BCI fingerprinting) required prior to start
  • Monthly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG monitoring
  • Education verification from accredited nursing programs (CCNE, ACEN, or NLN CNEA) required
  • Ohio BCI & FBI fingerprinting required with specific code (3701.881) and must be current within 1 year of start
  • Pending background check attestation required if fingerprint results are pending at start
  • Drug testing: Negative 10-panel drug screen within 3 months of start (no pending tests allowed)
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start confirming good health and free of contagious disease
  • Immunizations and health documents required:
    • Tdap (adult dose)
    • Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year
    • TB questionnaire
    • MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) vaccines or positive titers
    • Hepatitis B titer or vaccine series (declination acceptable)
    • Varicella vaccines or positive titer (medical exemptions reviewed)
    • Seasonal flu vaccine or declination during flu season (10/1 - 3/31)
  • Annual completion of Fraud, Waste, and Abuse training certificate
  • Annual review and acknowledgment of dress code and hand hygiene policies
  • Annual orientation safety manual acknowledgment
  • References: 2 professional references required, including at least 1 from a manager or formal leadership
