Job Opportunity: Certified OR Tech / Surgical Tech (CST) - Surgical Services
Location: Columbia, South Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Position Details
- Specialty: Labor & Delivery Certified Surgical Technologist (L&D CST)
- Shift: 3x12 hour night shifts (6:45 PM - 7:15 AM)
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
- On-call Requirement: Yes, 2 twelve-hour shifts within a 6-week period
- Floating: Yes, within the women’s service area to meet facility needs
Required Qualifications
- Certified Surgical Technologist with a minimum of 1 year of experience
- Experience as a Certified Surgical Technologist within the last year
- BLS (Basic Life Support) certification

- Block scheduling may be accommodated depending on unit needs
Important Notes
- During hurricane season (June through November, peak in August and September), all employees and contractors may be assigned to emergency response teams. Travelers should consider this before accepting new or extension assignments during this period.
Required Documentation & Compliance
- Background Checks:
- Annual background check covering all locations lived/worked in the past 7 years
- Must include SSN trace, county checks outside SC, SC statewide, sex offender registry, national criminal, OFAC, FACIS 3, employment and education verification
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start and updated for renewals
- Education Verification: Required; diploma or transcripts preferred as placeholder if verification is pending
- References: Proof of 2 clinical references, including at least one from the same unit
- Work History Verification: Last 3 clinical employers verified through a 3rd party vendor
- Photo for Badge: Clear, passport-style color photo with solid light background, frontal view, cropped from shoulders up
- Physical Exam: Must be current within 90 days of start, attesting ability to meet physical demands without restrictions; updated annually
- Drug Testing: 10-panel drug screen within 90 days of start; no instant tests accepted
- Immunizations & Health Requirements:
- Tdap vaccine within 10 years or declination form required
- Negative TB test (T-spot or Q-Gold) within 90 days of start or proof of prior positive with chest x-ray
- Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella: Positive titer or 2 vaccines required; low titers require boosters
- Hepatitis B: Titer, vaccine series, or declination required
- Flu vaccine required during flu season (Aug 1 - Apr 30) or medical/religious exemption; declinations not accepted
- COVID vaccines highly preferred; if declined, must complete MUSC Vaccination Declination form
- Respirator Clearance: Annual medical clearance required via RespSafety virtual questionnaire
- Competency Exams: Medication/pharmacology competency and general competency exams required as applicable
Certifications & Training Requirements
- ACLS: AHA certification required for all RNs (note: this is a CST role, but facility may require for RNs on unit)
- PALS: Required only for ER (not applicable here)
- NRP: Neonatal Resuscitation Program certification through AHA/AAP required
- EFM: Electronic Fetal Monitoring certification (AWHONN or NCC acceptable) required
- TNCC: Trauma Nursing Core Course as required (not required for ER RNs)
- Orientation: Completion of facility-specific orientation modules and safety manual acknowledgment required prior to start
Additional Notes
- Travelers must upload all required vaccination and health documentation into the facility’s system prior to start
- Facility may call off 1 shift per 2 weeks; called off hours can be broken down but cannot exceed 1 shift
- Floating within women’s service area expected to meet staffing needs
This position is ideal for a Certified Surgical Technologist with at least 1 year of experience in Labor & Delivery surgical services, comfortable working night shifts and on-call, and willing to float within related units. Prior travel experience is not required.
