Job Description
- Unit shares 22 beds with Pediatric Hematology/Oncology (10 beds), with flexibility to expand/swing beds based on census.
- Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1 RN to 4 patients.
- Patient population includes medical/surgical pediatric patients with diagnoses such as hyperbilirubinemia, neurological conditions, diabetes, failure to thrive, cystic fibrosis, COVID-19, and orthopedic cases.
- Charge RN and Pediatric Crisis RN available 24/7; administrative supervisor support 24/7.
- Patient Care Technicians (PCTs) support with a ratio of approximately 1:8-10.
- Hospitalist coverage until midnight; 24/7 resident coverage.
- Respiratory therapy equipment includes heated high flow and BiPAP with specific parameters; RNs troubleshoot as needed.
- Pediatric monitor tech monitors telemetry; RNs do not read their own strips.
- Shifts: 12-hour shifts (0700-1930 or 1900-0730).
- Weekend requirement: Every other weekend (day shift covers Sat/Sun; night shift covers Fri/Sat).
- Holiday work required unless otherwise approved.
- No mandatory call or standby requirements.
- Floating: RNs may float within the children's hospital to other pediatric units or mom/baby units (no ICU or chemo patients unless experienced).
- Dress code: Pediatric-appropriate scrub tops (any color or pattern, non-revealing), solid color scrub pants, option for long sleeve or scrub jacket underneath.
Required Certifications & Licenses
- Active Illinois RN license (or application process initiated).
- BLS (AHA).
- PALS (AHA).
Orientation & Other Notes
- Orientation: 2 shifts minimum, may be extended with management approval.
- Drug-free campus; negative drug screen required.
- Local placements accepted within a 50-mile radius.
