Registered Nurse – Telemetry Unit
Location: Martinsburg, West Virginia
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Unit & Patient Care Information
- Telemetry unit consists of two floors:
- 2nd Floor: 20 private rooms, transitioning to a Stepdown unit with higher acuity patients (including drips like ativan & insulin, titrating drips)
- 6th Floor: 22 beds (mix of private and semi-private), remains Telemetry acuity
- Patient acuity: Telemetry level, including elevated troponin, post-STEMI recovery, NSTEMI, pacers, oncology, peritoneal dialysis (training provided), occasional post-surgical patients
- Common treatments: Cardizem, Amiodarone, Labetolol, Dopamine, Dobutamine, Heparin, Integrilin per protocol, Nitro (set rate drips)
- Ventilator support: Bipap, Cpap, High Flow managed by Respiratory Therapy (RT)
- Nurses monitor cardiac telemetry strips every 4 hours and document rhythm in patient charts
- Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:5 for both day and night shifts
Shift & Scheduling
- 12-hour shifts: 7:00 AM – 7:30 PM (day or night)
- Scheduling requests submitted via Kronos, approved at least 2 weeks in advance for 4-week blocks
- Block scheduling may be allowed if included in contract
- Weekend requirement: every other weekend (Fri/Sat nights; Sat/Sun days)
- Holiday work may be required based on unit needs, though efforts are made to avoid scheduling travelers on holidays
- Floating is rare; may float to ICU for overflow or Ortho/MedSurg
Orientation & Team
- Floor-specific orientation: 1-2 days depending on experience
- Hospitalist in-house 24/7
- Respiratory Therapy in-house 24/7
- Pharmacy in-house 24/7, with Omnicell on the unit during the day
- No dedicated IV team
- Telemetry monitors: Phillips cardiac monitors with central monitoring station integrated into EMR (Epic)
Required Certifications & Licensure
- BLS (AHA)
- ACLS (AHA)
- Open to first-time travel nurses
Additional Requirements & Notes
- COVID-19 vaccine required (2 doses Moderna or Pfizer, or 1 dose J&J) unless approved medical or religious exemption
- Drivers license must be from an address more than 50 miles from the facility
- Background checks must be disclosed at time of submission
- Scrub color: Navy blue scrubs or white jacket; undershirt white or navy; natural hair color required; tattoos must be covered if deemed distasteful
Work Environment & Culture
- Charge nurse coverage varies; may have floating charge nurse between floors or one per floor who takes full patient assignment
- Nurse aides (PCTs) staffing varies; typically 3 per floor when fully staffed, sometimes only 1
- Opportunities for precepting and charge nurse roles available
Note: This position is suitable for nurses with telemetry experience and comfort managing moderate acuity patients including drips and cardiac monitoring. Prior travel experience is not required.
