Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (RN) - ICU

Location: Alton, Illinois
Contract Length: 13 weeks

Unit Details

• Department: Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU)
• Beds: 12 total, max census 11 (1 bed reserved for inpatient dialysis)
• Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:2-3, occasionally includes intermediate care patients
• Charge Nurse: Present 24/7, takes patient assignments
• House Supervisor: On-site 24/7
• Nurse Aids/Patient Care Techs: None; this is a primary care unit
• Hospitalist Coverage: In-house 22/7, on-call 5AM-7AM
• Intensivist Coverage: In-house a few hours daily, available by phone 24/7
• Respiratory Therapy: RT manages ventilators, CPAP, BiPAP, High Flow; RNs troubleshoot only
• Tele/Monitor Techs: Present in hospital monitoring ICU and telemetry patients; cardiac rhythm interpretation preferred for RNs

Patient Population & Care

• Common Diagnoses: CHF, COPD, Sepsis, MI, DKA, COVID-19, ventilated patients
• RN Responsibilities: Titration of drips including paralytics, sedatives, Cardizem, amiodarone, and other common ICU medications

Scheduling & Shifts

• Shift Length: 12-hour shifts (6:30 AM - 7:00 PM, 6:30 PM - 7:00 AM)
• Scheduling: Block scheduling accommodated upon request
• Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend (Days: Sat/Sun; Nights: Fri/Sat or Sat/Sun)
• Holiday Requirement: Every other holiday
• Call/Standby: None
• Floating: ICU travel nurses will not float to other departments

Orientation & Dress Code

• Orientation: 3 days total

  • Day 1: Online modules and general facility orientation
  • Days 2 & 3: On-floor orientation with a nurse
• Dress Code: Navy blue scrubs (not provided)

Required Certifications & Licenses

• Active Illinois RN license or proof of application initiation
• BLS (AHA)
• ACLS (AHA)
• NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
• Negative drug screen required (drug-free campus)

Additional Notes

• Prior travel experience is not explicitly required
• No floating to other departments for ICU travel nurses
• Nurse-to-patient ratios and patient acuity require ICU experience
• Cardiac rhythm interpretation skills preferred

Summary

This is a 13-week ICU RN contract position in Illinois requiring critical care experience, current Illinois RN licensure, and certifications in BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS.
