Registered Nurse - Neuro Stepdown & Epilepsy Monitoring Unit

Location: Morgantown, West Virginia
Contract Length: 13 weeks

Unit Overview

• Unit: Neuro Stepdown & Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU)
• Beds: 31 total (25 Stepdown, 6 EMU)
• Nurse-to-Patient Ratios:

  • Stepdown: 1:3
  • EMU Floor: 1:5-6
• Charge Nurse available 24/7
• Nurse Aides: 4 per shift (ratio 1:8-9)
• Respiratory Therapy available 24/7 (floor vents managed by RT and physicians; RN vent experience not required)
• Telemetry available; RNs do not read strips

Patient Population

• Higher acuity neuroscience patients
• Common diagnoses: strokes, seizures, craniotomies, EMU patients
• Experience with EVDs preferred (usually assigned to permanent staff)
• TPA patients managed by permanent staff

Required Certifications & Skills

• Current BLS certification required
• ACLS and NIHSS preferred
• Must be Stepdown qualified RN
• Strong overall neuro experience required
• EPIC experience required
• NIHSS certification required for orientation

Clinical Details

• Drip titration generally by physician orders; some protocols may allow RN titration with education
• Common drips: Amiodarone, Cardizem, Nitro, Dopamine, Nipride, Ketamine, Lasix, Bumex, Insulin

Scheduling & Work Expectations

• Night shifts: 3 shifts of 12 hours (7:00 pm - 7:30 am)
• Weekend requirement: Every other weekend or 2 weekend shifts per schedule
• Holiday shifts required as part of rotation
• Possible floating to other units (7E, 7W, 7NE, or 10W)
• Dress code: Royal Blue scrubs
• Orientation: 2 shifts on unit, dayshift (7:00 am - 7:30 pm), no on-call during orientation

Additional Requirements

• Fully COVID vaccinated (2 Moderna/Pfizer shots or 1 J&J) or approved exemption
• Driver’s license address must be outside 50 miles from facility
• Disclosure of any license issues required at submission
• Only one submission allowed at a time across the system
• Prior travel experience is not explicitly required

Required Qualifications Summary

• Registered Nurse license
• BLS certification (required)
• ACLS and NIHSS certifications (preferred)
• Strong neuro stepdown experience
• EPIC experience
• Ability to work night shifts, weekends, and holidays
• Flexibility to float to related units
