Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse - Orthopedics
Location: Bel Air, Maryland
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Start Date: ASAP or April 6, 2026
Shift: 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (Nights 7:00 PM - 7:30 AM)
Schedule: Every other weekend required; holidays as scheduled
Unit: Orthopedics (26 beds, 20 rooms)
Patient Population:
- Orthopedics: joint replacements, fracture repairs
- Spine: ACDF, fusions, decompressions
- Med/Surg: various diagnoses
Job Description
- Work on an orthopedic unit with a focus on musculoskeletal and telemetry patients
- Floating required within specialty and to lower acuity units as needed
- On-call not required
- Use of special equipment including PCA pumps, Bucks traction, overbed trapeze, sequential compression devices (SCD), foot pumps, Hoyer lift, incentive spirometer, Sara Stedy (sit to stand), and walkers
- Scrub color: Navy Blue
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Maryland
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Minimum 2 years of Med Surg / Telemetry nursing experience, including experience within the last year
- Orthopedics experience
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association
- Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association
- National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
Additional Requirements
- Background checks including 7-year criminal search, education verification, and state-specific exclusions
- Drug screening: Negative 9 or 10 panel drug screen within 30-45 days prior to start (instant tests not accepted)
- Physical exam within 1 year of start
- Fit mask test within 1 year of start
- Immunizations and titers required:
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (per unit requirements)
- Measles, Mumps, Rubella (positive titer or vaccination)
- Hepatitis B (positive titer or declination)
- Varicella (positive titer or vaccination)
- Flu vaccine or medical/religious exemption for 2025-26 season
- TB testing: Negative QGOLD or TSPOT within 1 year or 2-step PPD as applicable, updated annually
- Two professional references required, including at least one supervisor or charge nurse
- Employment history verification for the past 5 years
Orientation and Compliance
- Must complete facility-specific documents including confidentiality agreements, dress code review, and unit-specific job description
- Required to complete competency exams relevant to orthopedic/telemetry nursing
- May be required to complete crisis prevention training during orientation
- Facility-specific policies on appearance, hygiene, and conduct must be reviewed and signed
Summary
This is a 13-week travel contract for an experienced Registered Nurse with orthopedic and telemetry skills. The position requires night shifts, weekend and holiday coverage, and flexibility to float within the specialty. Strong orthopedic/spine experience is preferred, but first-time travelers with relevant experience are welcome. Compliance with extensive credentialing, background checks, immunizations, and facility-specific requirements is mandatory.
