Job Opportunity: Medical Surgical Registered Nurse (Med Surg RN - Urology/Nephrology)

Location: Springfield, Illinois
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Position Details

  • Shift: Nights, either 4x12 or 3x12 (1845-0715)
  • Unit: 25-bed medical surgical unit specializing in Urology/Nephrology
  • Average Daily Census: 23 patients
  • Weekend Requirement: Work every other weekend
  • On-call: Not required
  • Floating: May float within scope to other Medical Surgical units
  • Block Scheduling: May be accommodated but not guaranteed
  • Locals Accepted: Yes, no radius restrictions
  • Charge Nurse: Will work charge as needed

Required Experience & Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in Illinois
  • Minimum 2 years of Medical Surgical nursing experience, with Med Surg experience within the last year
  • Experience in Medical Surgical and Telemetry settings
  • BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Experience using Rapid Response Teams
  • Blood product administration skills
  • Central line blood draw experience
  • Proficient in chest tube management (Emerson/Pleur-evac)
  • Experience with CPAP and BiPAP respiratory support
  • Skilled in High Flow Nasal Cannula (HFNC) use
  • Experience with Cerner electronic medical record system

Skills & Clinical Requirements

  • Work Setting Experience: Medical/Surgical and Telemetry
  • Cardiac Monitoring & Emergency Response: Telemetry remote monitoring, use of Rapid Response Teams
  • Genitourinary/Renal Skills: Pre/Post Hemodialysis management, renal failure care
  • IV Therapy/Phlebotomy: Blood product administration, central line blood draws, peripheral line care/management, PICC line management, starting IVs
  • Medication Skills: Heparin administration
  • Respiratory Care: Chest tubes (Emerson/Pleur-evac), CPAP/BiPAP, High Flow Nasal Cannula (HFNC), nasal cannula, non-invasive airway management, oral suctioning, portable oxygen tank
  • Professional Knowledge: Isolation precautions, wound care including wound vac
  • Electronic Medical Record: Experience with Cerner required

Additional Information

  • RTO Restrictions: Ideally no more than 5 days off
  • Scrub Color: Any solid color scrubs allowed
  • Charting System: Cerner
  • Parking: Permit required, no cost

Required Documentation & Compliance

  • Background checks covering all locations lived/worked in past 7 years
  • Primary source verification of licenses and certifications
  • Physical exam within one year of start, including labs
  • Fit mask test required prior to start
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within one year
  • Drug screening (9 panel) within 30 days of start
  • Immunizations or proof of immunity for MMR, Varicella, Hepatitis B, and seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption
  • References: Two professional references required
  • Competency exam required for clinical candidates
  • Badge photo required before start

Summary

This is a travel contract position for a Medical Surgical RN with a specialty in Urology/Nephrology in Springfield, IL. The role requires a minimum of 2 years of Med Surg nursing experience, an active Illinois RN license, and strong clinical skills in telemetry, renal care, IV therapy, respiratory support, and emergency response. The position offers night shifts with every other weekend work and requires flexibility to float within medical surgical units. Cerner EMR experience is mandatory.
