Registered Nurse – Cardio Thoracic Unit
Location: Peoria, Illinois
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Unit Overview
- Department: Cardio Thoracic
- Unit Size: 70 beds
- Nurse-to-Patient Ratios:
- Days: 1:4-5
- Nights: 1:5-6
- Patient Types: MI, CHF, A fib, COPD, pacemaker/AICD placement, lung surgeries (including chest tubes, esophagectomy), general medical overflow
Shift Details
- Shift Length: 12 hours
- Shift Times: 7:00 AM – 7:30 PM and 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
- Days: Saturday/Sunday
- Nights: Friday/Saturday or Saturday/Sunday
- Holiday Requirement: Rotating schedule
- Holidays include Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s Day (with corresponding eves for night shifts)
Job Responsibilities & Skills
- Titrate drips (mainly Cardizem and heparin)
- EKG interpretation required
- Medication titration
- Basic nursing skills
- RN licensure required
- Ability to read and interpret telemetry strips (Phillips monitors)
- Float to other general medical units as needed
- Troubleshoot respiratory equipment such as CPAP, BiPAP (if part of patient’s home regimen), and heated high flow oxygen in special cases
Staffing & Support
- Charge Nurse: 24/7 coverage, rarely takes patient assignments
- House Supervisor: 24/7 coverage
- Patient Care Tech Ratios:
- Days: 1:8-9
- Evenings: 1:9-10
- Nights: 1:10-12
- Tele/Monitor Techs present on unit
Orientation & Dress Code
- Orientation: Typically 1 shift or part of one, depending on prior experience at the facility
- Dress Code: Any scrub color allowed except children/cartoon prints (adult unit)
Required Certifications & Licenses
- Active Illinois RN license (or application in process)
- BLS (AHA) required
- ACLS recommended
Additional Notes
- Drug-free workplace; negative drug screen required
- Local placements accepted within a 50-mile radius
- Non-billable orientation hours: 12 hours
Experience Requirements
- Specialty Experience: Cardio Thoracic nursing skills including EKG interpretation and medication titration
