Job Opportunity: Surgical Room Nurse

Job Summary

Seeking experienced nursing professionals for surgical room positions in a high-acuity acute care setting. The unit handles a high volume of cases daily, including trauma and complex surgical procedures.

Unit & Patient Information

• Beds: 28 (including 2 hybrid rooms for cardiovascular/vascular cases)
• Approximate caseload: 60-75 cases per day
• Patient types include outpatient, inpatient, trauma, and a variety of surgical specialties such as general surgery, gynecology, urology, robotics, vascular, orthopedic, neurology, open heart surgeries, and CABGs.
• Hybrid room cases include TAVR, AAA, endarterectomies, angiograms, and fistula revisions (adults only).
• Approximately 20% pediatric cases (open hearts, appendectomy, cholecystectomy).
• No liver or lung transplant cases.
• Participates in organ donation cases.

Required Experience

• 2-3 years of acute care experience required.
• For Hybrid IR Tech roles, 3 years of hybrid experience required.
• First-time travel nurses are accepted.

Required Certifications & Licenses

• OR RN / CVOR RN: BLS required
• CVOR Tech: BLS and relevant certification required
• CST: BLS and CST certification required
• Hybrid IR Tech: BLS and ARRT certification required
• Surgical Assistant (SA): BLS and CSA certification (if applicable)

Skills & Competencies

• OR RN: Ability to scrub and circulate; critical care experience preferred; trauma experience at Level 1-2; EPIC electronic health record experience required.
• CVOR RN: Ability to scrub and circulate adult or pediatric open-heart cases; critical care and Level 1 trauma experience; EPIC experience required.
• CST: Ability to scrub the specified cases.
• CVOR Tech: Ability to scrub adult or pediatric open-heart cases.
• Hybrid IR Tech: Experience with hybrid patient types and Siemens equipment required.

Support & Resources

• Charge nurse available (no patient assignment during weekdays)
• Bedside monitoring by anesthesiologist
• Resource nurse, educators, service line representatives, and EPIC super-user support
• Surgeons with preference cards available
• Advanced monitoring and equipment including EPIC, Alaris, Pyxis, and Siemens for hybrid rooms

Orientation

• Day 1: Meet educators and nurse manager, gain system access, complete online modules and EPIC training
• Days 2-3: Unit orientation

Scheduling & Shifts

• Weekend rotation every 4th weekend (Saturday-Sunday)
• Shift options include:

  • 06:45 - 15:15
  • 14:45 - 19:15
  • 22:45 - 07:15
  • 3x 12-hour shifts
  • 2x 8-hour and 2x 12-hour shifts
  • 5x 8-hour shifts
  • Hybrid/RT shifts Monday-Thursday, 8-10 hours
• 6-week rotating schedule, with 2-4 weeks’ notice provided
• No self-scheduling; assignments based on rotation needs
• Operating hours:

  • OR open 24/7, 365 days/year
  • Regular hours M-F 07:30 - 23:00; after hours skeleton crew for trauma/urgent cases
  • Weekend hours 07:00 - 17:00; after hours skeleton crew for trauma/urgent cases
• Holiday coverage required
• On-call requirements vary by shift/service line; 30-minute response time expected; sleeping room available for on-call staff

Patient Ratios

• 1:1 nurse-to-patient ratio
