Registered Nurse - Acute Care

Location: Peoria, Illinois
Contract Length: 13 weeks

Unit Details

• Unit Type: Acute Care
• Beds: 29 (Typical census 22-26, target 25)
• Room Type: Mix of private and semi-private rooms
• Nurse-to-Patient Ratios:

  • Day shift: 4-5 patients per nurse
  • Night shift: 5-6 patients per nurse
• Patient Types: Medical diagnoses including GI bleeds, sepsis, cellulitis, CHF, COVID, comfort measures, osteomyelitis, elderly patients with falls, DVT, pulmonary embolisms
• Patients may leave for surgery/procedures and return to the unit

Work Schedule

• Shift Length: 12-hour shifts (7am-7pm & 7pm-7am)
• Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend

  • Day shift weekends: Saturday/Sunday
  • Night shift weekends: Friday/Saturday
• Holiday Requirement: Rotated holidays
• Call/Standby: None

Responsibilities & Environment

• RNs titrate drips: Yes, Heparin only
• Charge Nurse: 24-hour coverage; charge nurse generally free of patient assignment
• Crisis RN and administrative supervisor available 24/7
• Patient Care Techs: 24-hour coverage, ratio 1:10
• Respiratory Equipment: No ventilators; oxygen up to 6L NC, stable BiPAP/CPAP at night or PRN
• Telemetry: Monitored remotely by telemetry department; unit uses Phillips equipment
• Unit Clerk: 24-hour coverage
• Floating: Travel RNs float first to other med/surg units; no ICU or chemo patients
• Orientation: 2 shifts of unit-specific orientation
• Dress Code: Any color scrubs, staff provide their own; no pediatric scrubs
• IV Starts: RNs expected to attempt IV starts; inpatient phlebotomy team assists with blood draws

Required Certifications & Licenses

• Active Illinois RN license (or application in process)
• BLS Certification

Additional Notes

• Drug-free campus; negative drug screen required
• Local placements accepted within 50-mile radius
• Non-billable orientation hours: 12 hours
