Registered Nurse - Medical-Surgical/Telemetry (Travel/Contract)
Location: Columbus, Ohio
Contract Length: 16 weeks
Job Summary
- Float to various Oncology Medical-Surgical (MS) units as needed within a secure corrections health unit environment.
- Shifts may include days, nights, or a rotating combination based on department needs.
- Work in a locked corrections unit with controlled access and a nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:3 (PCU) or 1:4-5 (MS).
- Weekend shifts vary based on unit requirements.
Patient Population & Care Focus
- Patients with active oncology diagnoses/treatments (solid tumors, hematology) and oncology workup admissions.
- Patients with history of cancer admitted for other reasons (e.g., surgical procedures, COPD, sepsis, pneumonia).
- Non-oncology diagnoses as well.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide nursing care in Medical-Surgical and Telemetry units.
- Ensure staff safety in a secure corrections environment.
- Cardiac monitoring and emergency response including dysrhythmia interpretation and telemetry monitoring.
- Manage IV therapy, blood product administration, central/peripheral lines, PICC lines, and starting IVs.
- Administer medications including heparin protocols, cardiac drips (no titration), and PCA.
- Respiratory care including CPAP/BIPAP, High Flow Nasal Cannula, ABG interpretation, tracheostomy management, and oxygen therapy.
- Support interdisciplinary teams including pharmacy, physical therapy, radiology, respiratory services, social services, and rapid response teams.
Required Certifications & Licenses
- Registered Nurse (RN) license valid in Ohio.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (AHA Instructor/Provider or RQI accepted).
- EPIC charting experience required.
- Oncology experience preferred but not required.
Required Experience
- Specialty: Registered Nurse (Medical-Surgical/Telemetry).
- Minimum years of experience: Not explicitly stated; oncology experience preferred but not mandatory.
- Prior travel experience: Not required.
Systems & Equipment
- Medication system: Pyxis.
- Documentation system: EPIC.
Background & Compliance Requirements
- 7-year criminal background check including FBI and BCI fingerprinting required prior to start.
- Education verification from an accredited nursing program (CCNE, ACEN, or NLN CNEA).
- Drug screening: Negative 10-panel drug screen within 3 months of start (no pending results allowed).
- Various health documents required including physical exam, immunizations (Tdap, MMR, Varicella, Hepatitis B), TB testing or questionnaire, and flu vaccination or declination during flu season.
- Annual competency exams including medication/pharmacology and dysrhythmia/EKG competency required.
- Additional certifications may be required depending on unit assignment (e.g., ACLS, PALS, NRP).
Additional Requirements
- 2 professional references required, including at least one from a manager or formal leadership.
- Completion of unit-specific competency exams and orientation safety manual acknowledgment.
- Compliance with dress code and hand hygiene policies.
- Completion of fraud, waste, and abuse training prior to start and annually thereafter.
Work Environment
- Secure corrections health unit with controlled access by corrections officers.
- Nurse-to-patient ratios: 1:3 in PCU, 1:4-5 in MS units.
- May float between Oncology Medical-Surgical and PCU units.
Shift Details
- 12-hour day/night rotating shifts possible.
- Shift assignments reviewed every 4 weeks but subject to staffing needs.
Requirements / Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Ohio.
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
- Minimum of 1 year of Medical-Surgical and Telemetry nursing experience within the last year.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association.
- Experience with Electronic Fetal Monitoring (EFM).
- Proficient in Epic electronic health record system.
- Skilled in PICC line management.
- Experience with Patient-Controlled Analgesia (PCA).
- Knowledge and experience with IV insulin protocols.
- Competent in external CPAP/BIPAP use and non-invasive airway management.
