Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse - Oncology
Location: Columbus, Ohio
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 16 weeks
Job Summary
- Work in an oncology unit caring for adult and geriatric patients with various solid tumor cancers.
- Patient diagnoses commonly include breast, lung, prostate, pancreatic, colon, and esophageal cancers, as well as patients receiving antineoplastic chemotherapy.
- The unit focuses on the full cancer journey: from diagnosis through treatment and end-of-life care.
- Staffing ratios aim for 1:4, sometimes 1:5.
- Shift schedule is a 12-hour day/night rotating schedule with variable weekends based on unit needs.
- Orientation includes one week of day shift classroom training followed by 36 hours of on-unit precepted orientation.
- Floating to other MedSurg Oncology units is required.
- Self-scheduling requests are accommodated before final schedule posting.
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Ohio
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) / Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Minimum 2 years of telemetry nursing experience, including telemetry interpretation and monitoring
- Telemetry experience within the last year
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
Patient Population
- Adults and geriatrics.
- Patients with solid tumor cancers and related medical-surgical issues.
- Emphasis on infection prevention and fall prevention protocols.
Orientation & Scheduling
- Orientation: 1 week classroom (Mon-Fri dayshift) + 36 hours on-unit with preceptor.
- Rotating 12-hour day/night shifts.
- Shift assignments reviewed every 4 weeks.
- No set/blocked scheduling; schedule varies based on department needs.
Background & Compliance Requirements
- 7-year criminal background check including FBI and BCI fingerprinting required.
- Education verification from an accredited nursing program (CCNE, ACEN, or NLN CNEA).
- Ohio BCI & FBI fingerprinting with specific code requirements.
- Monthly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG monitoring.
- Drug screening: Negative 10-panel drug test within 3 months of start.
- Physical exam within 1 year confirming good health and free of contagious disease.
- Immunizations and health documents required:
- Tdap vaccine (adult dose)
- Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year
- TB questionnaire
- MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) vaccination or positive titers
- Hepatitis B titer or vaccine series (declination acceptable)
- Varicella vaccination or positive titer (medical exemptions reviewed)
- Seasonal flu vaccine or declination during flu season (mask required if declined)
- Annual background check required by agency.
- References: 2 professional references required, including at least one from a manager or formal leader.
- Skills checklist and employment application required.
Competency & Testing Requirements
- Medication/Pharmacology competency exam prior to start.
- Unit-specific competency exams.
- Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required within 1 year of start and updated annually (with remediation process if needed).
Additional Notes
- Floating to other oncology med-surg units is expected.
- Prior travel experience is preferred but not mandatory.
- No set/blocked scheduling; flexibility required.
- Heavy focus on infection prevention and patient safety.
