Registered Nurse - Stepdown Unit

Location: Morgantown, West Virginia
Contract Length: 13 weeks

Unit Overview

• Unit Type: Stepdown (8 Southeast)
• Number of Beds: 32
• Nurse-to-Patient Ratios:

  • Stepdown assignments: 1:3
  • Combo assignments (mix of stepdown and floor patients): 1:4
• Patient Types: Post-surgical Thoracic and Medicine patients

Required Certifications

• BLS (Basic Life Support)
• ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
• NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)

Experience & Skills

• Strong MedSurg Stepdown experience required
• Ability to titrate drips with specific parameters (orders placed by MD)
• Ability to interpret and read cardiac strips
• Common drips to titrate: Cardizem, Amiodarone, Dopamine, Nitro, Esmolol, Heparin, Lasix (no vasopressors)

Staffing & Support

• Charge Nurse and House Supervisors present on-site
• 3-4 CNAs per shift
• Respiratory Therapy equipment: No ventilators, but BiPAP and tracheostomy care available
• Telemetry:

  • Centralized monitoring station for RNs
  • RNs interpret and chart patient rhythms every 4 hours or more frequently during medication titration
  • Centralized telemetry team interprets and files EKG strips

Schedule & Work Requirements

• Shift: Nights (7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
• Weekend Requirement: 3 weekend shifts in a 4-week schedule (Saturday, Sunday, Saturday)
• Holiday Requirement: Must work holidays if needed
• Call/Standby: No call or standby required
• Floating: Very rare

Orientation

• 3 shifts of unit-specific orientation on night shift
• Weekend orientation as needed

Additional Information

• COVID-19 Vaccine Required (2 doses Moderna/Pfizer or 1 dose J&J) or approved exemption
• Driver’s license must be from outside a 50-mile radius of the facility
• Previous permanent candidates must have been gone for 2 years before reapplying
• Previous travelers must have been gone for 2 years after 1 full year of travel at this facility
• Travel teams must be submitted together
• Only 2 candidates submitted per opening

Required Qualifications Summary

• Registered Nurse license
• BLS and ACLS certifications
• Strong MedSurg Stepdown experience with drip titration and cardiac monitoring skills
