Registered Nurse – Neuro ICU

Location: Peoria, Illinois
Contract Length: 13 weeks

Unit Overview

• Department: Neuro ICU
• Unit Size: 18 beds
• Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:2
• Shift Length: 12 hours
• Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
• Holiday Requirement: Rotating every other holiday
• Orientation: 20 hours (one 8-hour shift and one 12-hour shift)
• Floating: Travelers float first; may float to intermediate (1:3 ratio) or general floors (1:4 ratio)

Patient Population & Care

• Common Diagnoses: Ventriculostomy patients, strokes (with/without tPA), post-craniectomy care
• Typical Procedures/Skills: Ventriculostomy, NIH Stroke Scale Certification, ventilator management, arterial and central lines, acute stroke management, tPA administration
• Drip Management: RNs are required to titrate drips as ordered by physicians; variety of drips used

Staffing & Support

• Charge Nurse: Present; may take patient assignments if staffing is limited
• House Supervisor: Available 24/7
• Nurse Aides/Patient Care Techs: Yes, with a 9:1 ratio
• Respiratory Therapy Equipment: RNs troubleshoot vents, CPAP, BiPAP, high flow devices
• Tele/Monitor Techs: Present on every shift; nurses read and interpret telemetry strips (Phillips monitors)

Required Certifications & Licensure

• Active Illinois RN license or proof of application initiation required
• BLS (Basic Life Support)
• ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)

Experience & Skills

• Specialty Experience: Neuro ICU nursing with skills in stroke management, ventilator care, and line management
• Must be comfortable with high-acuity neuro patients and complex critical care interventions
• Prior travel experience: Not explicitly required

• Drug-Free Workplace: Negative drug screen required
• Local placements accepted within a 50-mile radius
• Non-billable orientation hours: 12 hours (do not count toward guaranteed hours)
• Call or standby: Not applicable

This position is ideal for experienced Neuro ICU RNs comfortable with critical care nursing, complex neurological patients, and working in a fast-paced ICU environment.
