Description

Job Opportunity: Step Down Registered Nurse (RN) - Nights

Location: Glen Burnie, Maryland
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 12 weeks
Start Date: May 4, 2026
Shift: 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (Nights 8:00 PM - 8:30 AM)
Schedule: Every other weekend and holidays as scheduled
Floating: Required within specialty sister units and lower acuity units as needed
On-Call: No pre-scheduled on-call shifts required


Unit and Patient Population Details

  • Tele Stepdown unit with 27 beds, average census 26 patients

  • Patient Age Range: Adults and Geriatrics

  • Common Diagnoses:

    • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
    • Gastrointestinal Bleeding
    • End Stage Renal Disease
    • Cardiac Dysrhythmias and electrolyte imbalances requiring cardiac monitoring
    • Chronically ventilator-dependent patients
    • Patients receiving peritoneal dialysis
  • Special Procedures: Peritoneal dialysis, bedside thoracentesis

  • Special Equipment: Viking lift, sit-to-stand lift, EKG, Zoll monitor, vacuum dressings


Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Maryland
  • Verification of State License and NURSYS (RN, LPN/LVN, AP)
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Minimum 2 years of Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience, including at least 2 years in MedSurg/Telemetry (Step down) nursing
  • PCU experience within the last year
  • Certifications required:
    • Basic Life Support (BLS) issued by American Heart Association
    • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
    • Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI)
    • NIH Stroke Scale Certification (NIHSS)

Additional Requirements

  • Background checks including 7-year criminal history, education verification, and various federal/state screenings
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start
  • Negative 9-panel drug screen within 30 days prior to start
  • Fit testing for respirators within 1 year of start, updated annually
  • Immunizations and titers required:
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (if working with children)
    • TB testing (QGOLD, TSPOT, or 2-step PPD) with annual updates
    • Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella (positive titer or vaccination proof)
    • Hepatitis B (positive titer or declination accepted)
    • Seasonal Flu vaccine or approved medical/religious exemption for 2025-26 season
  • COVID-19 vaccine not required for this location, but documentation or declination collected for tracking

Competency and Training

  • Medication/Pharmacology competency exam required within 1 year of start
  • Age-specific competency exam required
  • Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required for RN specialties within 1 year of start
  • Color blindness testing required
  • Facility-specific learning modules and Epic training must be completed prior to start
  • Pyxis access form completion required after learning modules

Documentation and Compliance

  • Government-issued photo ID required
  • I9 or attestation required
  • E-Verify or attestation required
  • Facility-specific documents including confidentiality agreement, dress code review, and badge application must be completed
  • Two supervisory references required within 1 year of start
  • Employment application/resume completed within 30 days of start
  • Verification of previous 5 years of work history required (attestation accepted)
  • Maryland State Exclusions List check required within 30 days of start

Additional Notes

  • Floating within specialty and lower acuity units is required
  • Weekends and holidays are mandatory as scheduled
  • No pre-scheduled on-call shifts
  • Dark blue scrub color required for this unit

This position is ideal for experienced RNs with at least 2 years of acute care experience who are comfortable working night shifts in a tele stepdown environment with a diverse adult and geriatric patient population requiring specialized care.
