Registered Nurse - Progressive Care Unit (PCU)

Unit Details

Location: Ross Cardiac Step Down, City, State

This unit specializes in the care of vascular and cardiac surgery patients, including but not limited to CABG, valve surgeries, TAVR, vascular stents/grafts, AAA, and lower extremity bypass procedures.

Shift

• Night Shift: 3x12-Hour (19:00 - 07:30)
• Weekend Coverage: Every Other Weekend

Patient Care

Estimated Patient Ratios:

• Days: 1:3
• Nights: 1:3
• Weekends: 1:3

Daily Census: Approximately 26 patients

Qualifications

• 2 years of experience in a Progressive Care Unit (PCU) is required.
• Travel experience is required.
• Certifications: BLS, ACLS (preferred).
• Epic experience is required.

Skills

Preferred skills include:

• Cardiovascular experience, particularly with pre/post cardiac surgery, sheath removal, and TR Band.
• Experience with IV insulin protocols and titration of insulin drips.
• Management of arterial lines, central lines, and PICC lines.
• Ability to administer blood products and high flow oxygen.
• Interpretation of arterial blood gases (ABGs) and management of dysrhythmias.

Work Environment

The RN will be expected to float within units of equivalent or lower levels of acuity. The interdisciplinary team includes Physical Therapy, Respiratory Services, Interpretation Services, Radiology, Social Services, Rapid Response Teams, Pharmacy, and Transportation.

Special Procedures

This unit handles patients arriving directly from the OR, post PACU recovery, ED, or direct admissions. Key diagnostics include chronic or acute renal failure, diabetes mellitus, pneumonia, heart failure, and sepsis.

Special Equipment

• Arterial lines
• Telemetry
• Chest tubes
• PCA and epidurals
• Wound vacs and JP drains

Orientation

36 hours of orientation will be provided.
