Job Summary

Under general direction, the individual is responsible for observing and practicing sterile technique, maintaining asepsis, and anticipating and assisting the surgeon as needed. The candidate will actively participate in patient care and safety while utilizing operating room supplies conservatively as a team member of the operating room staff.

Job Responsibilities

• Adhere to Infection Control policies and procedures and demonstrate expertise in surgical scrub technique.
• Follow principles of sterile technique both preoperatively and intra-operatively.
• Assist the surgeon as required in gowning, gloving, draping, and passing instruments and other related items during procedures; anticipate the surgeon’s need for instruments, sutures, and equipment.
• Maintain an organized operative field at all times by ensuring instruments are clean and properly placed.
• Keep an accurate count of sponges, tapes, needles, dissectors, and instruments.
• Prepare for cases by assembling supplies and equipment according to preference cards, identifying conflicts or issues as necessary.
• Provide a safe surgical environment by identifying potential hazards and assisting the RN circulator in the preoperative checks of equipment.
• Display knowledge of potential hazards associated with equipment, chemicals, or gases within the operating room.
• Utilize experienced operating room staff as resources and serve as a resource for new personnel.
• Assist in suturing, retracting, and suctioning under the direction of the surgeon.
• Handle and identify specimens according to policy.
• Facilitate the efficient turnover of the operating room between cases.
• Perform additional responsibilities as requested.

• Previous experience in the operating room.
• Previous experience as a Surgical Technologist.

• NBSTSA - Certified Surgical Technologist (CST)
• BLS Certification (AHA, HSI, or American Red Cross)

Schedule Notes

Required Certifications: NBSTSA (CST), BLS. Required Experience: Obstetrics, Gynecology, General Surgery, and Orthopedic cases. Cesarean experience required.

Typical schedule is Monday through Thursday from 6:30 AM to 5:00 PM, with regularly scheduled shifts. When on-call, a response time within 20 minutes is required for acute emergencies. Please include high school education in your resume.
