Job Summary

The Radiation Therapy Technologist is responsible for the delivery of ionizing radiation to treat patients according to the Radiation Oncologist's prescriptions and simulation instructions.

Essential Functions

• Execute the prescribed course of radiotherapy safely and effectively while assessing images and performing diagnostic and interventional procedures.
• Administer radiation treatments and monitor their delivery while ensuring comprehensive documentation.
• Obtain and evaluate portal images, implementing corrective measures as necessary.
• Perform calculations relevant to treatment delivery.
• Prepare treatment rooms and equipment before patient sessions.
• Educate patients about the equipment and procedures involved in their treatment.
• Ensure informed consent is obtained from all patients.
• Transfer and position patients accurately for treatment.

Simulation and Treatment Setup

• Simulate treatment portals following Radiation Oncologist's guidelines using conventional and/or CT simulators.
• Document detailed and clear setup instructions, including setup aides, treatment distance, field size, treatment depth, and angles.
• Assess diagnostic studies for appropriate field placement.
• Prepare and construct immobilization devices as needed.
• Place marks, tattoos, and landmark points to ensure precise setup.
• Perform treatment calculations based on Medical Physicist protocols.
• Construct and mount individualized shielding blocks and lead cut-outs as required.
• Prepare and apply individualized bolus for treatments.

Quality Assurance and Maintenance

• Conduct quality assurance procedures for treatment units, manual simulators, CT simulators, film processors, and treatment accessories, following departmental policies.
• Maintain a timely execution of daily treatment appointment schedules, coordinating with patient care floors and transportation.
• Keep work areas clean, organized, and stocked with necessary supplies.
• Monitor equipment functionality, reporting any malfunctions to the relevant authorities.

Patient Interaction

• Assess and address the physical condition and needs of patients, answering questions within professional scope.
• Ensure patients receive educational materials at the beginning of their treatment.
• Promote orderliness and cleanliness in the Radiation Oncology Department, especially in patient care rooms.
• Participate in teaching Radiation Therapy to students during their clinical rotations.

Physical Requirements

• Must be able to lift a minimum of 25 lbs., push and pull a minimum of 25 lbs., and stand for a minimum of 4 hours per day.

Skills and Qualifications

• 1 to 2 years of experience preferred.
• Graduate of an approved Radiation Therapy Program.
• Must be registered by the ARRT in Radiation Therapy.
• Current state license required.
• Proficiency in Varian/ARIA software is preferred.
• Current CPR certification is necessary.

Work Schedule

• Standard clinic shift: 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM (hours may vary based on patient load).
• Weekend work is not required.
