Unit Information

Position: Registered Nurse

Specialty: Progressive Care Unit (PCU)

Shift: Night 3x12-Hour (19:00 - 07:30)

Teaching Hospital Experience: Preferred

Certifications

• Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) - Preferred
• Basic Life Support (BLS) - Required

Skills

• IV therapy and phlebotomy
• Blood product administration
• Central line care and management
• Peripheral line care and management
• PICC line management
• Starting and maintaining IVs
• Medication administration
• Heparin protocols
• PCA management
• Cardiac monitoring and emergency response
• Interpretation and management of dysrhythmias
• Telemetry monitoring (unit and remote)
• Use of Rapid Response/Code teams
• Isolation precautions and PPE
• Wound care and Wound Vac management
• Endocrine/Metabolic management
• IV insulin protocols and titration of insulin drips

Work Settings

• Medical/Surgical/Telemetry (MS/Tele)
• Progressive Care Unit (PCU)/Stepdown Unit
• Respiratory care
• Surgical drains management

Patient Demographics

This position will primarily serve adults and geriatric patients with the following diagnoses:

• Bariatric Surgery
• Colorectal Surgery
• General Medicine
• Special Procedures/Unit Details

Interdisciplinary Support

Collaborate with various support staff including:

• IV Teams
• Physical Therapy
• Respiratory Services
• Interpretation Services
• Radiology
• Social Services
• Rapid Response Teams
• Pharmacy
• Transportation
• Unit Secretary

Additional Requirements

• Must be able to pass the telemetry test
• Experience in monitoring telemetry patients is required
• Epic experience is required
• Float to other areas may be required if not needed on home unit
• Weekend coverage every other weekend is expected

Patient Care Ratios

This unit aims to maintain the following nurse-to-patient ratios:

• MS/Tele: 4-5:1 with attempts to maintain 4:1
• Progressive Care: 3-4:1 with attempts to maintain 3:1
