Position Overview

The Respiratory Therapist will be responsible for evaluating patients and, in accordance with physician orders and protocols, administering respiratory care treatments. This role involves educating patients with cardiopulmonary disabilities, injuries, and diseases.

Key Responsibilities

• Assemble and verify the proper functionality of respiratory equipment, addressing any malfunctions promptly.
• Collect and assess pertinent clinical information to evaluate the patient’s overall cardiopulmonary status.
• Conduct therapeutic procedures aimed at ensuring adequate spontaneous and artificial ventilation.
• Manage airway maintenance procedures, including the care of artificial airways and the removal of bronchial secretions.
• Assess prescribed respiratory care plans, recommend modifications, and actively participate in developing these plans.
• Monitor and evaluate the patient’s response to respiratory care and make necessary adjustments in therapeutic techniques.
• Explain care plans, therapies, and goals to patients, ensuring clear communication is documented.
• Act swiftly in emergency situations to initiate, conduct, or modify respiratory care techniques.
• Adhere to infection control policies and procedures to protect patients from nosocomial infections.
• Provide guidance and serve as a resource on complicated respiratory care cases and procedures to other staff members.
• Conduct in-service education within the department to enhance the knowledge and skills of team members.

Qualifications

• Active Illinois Respiratory Care License.
• Current certifications in BLS, ACLS, PALS, and NRP.
• Successful completion of NBRC certification.
• At least 2 years of experience as a Certified Respiratory Therapist in an adult critical care setting.
• Experience in an emergency department.
• Neonatal and pediatric experience is required.
• Proficient with Cerner EMR.
• Ability to interact effectively with diverse patient populations.

Work Schedule

This position requires a 36-hour work week with rotating weekends. There may be a possibility of extended hours.
