Job Summary

Under general direction, the incumbent is responsible for practicing sterile technique, maintaining asepsis, and providing assistance to the surgeon as needed. The role involves active participation in patient care and safety, ensuring the conservative use of Operating Room (OR) supplies while functioning as an integral member of the OR staff.

Job Responsibilities

• Adhere to Infection Control policies and procedures, demonstrating proficiency in surgical scrub technique.
• Maintain principles of sterile technique throughout preoperative and intra-operative phases.
• Assist the surgeon with gowning, gloving, draping, and passing instruments and other necessary items during procedures, anticipating the surgeon’s needs for instruments, sutures, and equipment.
• Keep the operative field organized by ensuring instruments are clean and properly placed at all times.
• Conduct accurate counts of sponges, tapes, needles, dissectors, and instruments.
• Prepare for surgical cases by assembling supplies and equipment based on preference cards, identifying and resolving any conflicts or issues.
• Ensure a safe surgical environment by recognizing potential hazards for the patient, surgeon, and assisting RN circulator during preoperative equipment checks.
• Display knowledge of potential hazards (such as equipment, chemicals, or gases) present in the Operating Room.
• Utilize experienced OR staff as a resource, while also serving as a resource for new OR personnel.
• Assist in suturing, retracting, and suctioning under the direction of the surgeon.
• Handle and identify specimens in accordance with policy.
• Facilitate an efficient turnover of the OR between surgical cases.
• Participate in rotating call duty as required.
• Be prepared to perform additional responsibilities as requested.

• Previous experience in an Operating Room setting.
• Experience as a Surgical Technologist.

• High school diploma or equivalent.

Required Certifications & Licensure

• National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) Certified Surgical Technologist (CST).
• BLS Certification (American Heart Association, Health & Safety Institute, or American Red Cross).

Schedule Notes

The position operates on general OR work hours, with options for either five 8-hour shifts or four 10-hour shifts, concluding daily at 11:30 PM. Call duties will be assigned to work one weekend every 3 to 4 weeks, with evening shifts also concluding at 11:30 PM. Additionally, 1 to 2 night call shifts will be scheduled each week, from 11:30 PM to 7:00 AM, after shifts worked on the scheduled weekend.
