Job Summary

Under general direction, the role involves observing and practicing sterile technique, maintaining asepsis, and providing assistance to the surgeon as needed. The individual will actively participate in patient care and safety while efficiently utilizing operating room supplies and working as an integral team member of the operating room staff.

Job Responsibilities

• Follow Infection Control policies and procedures, demonstrating proficiency in surgical scrub technique.
• Adhere to principles of sterile technique both preoperatively and intra-operatively.
• Assist the surgeon with gowning, gloving, draping, and passing instruments and other related items during procedures, while anticipating the surgeon's needs for instruments, sutures, and equipment.
• Maintain an organized operative field at all times by keeping instruments clean and properly arranged.
• Accurately keep track of sponges, tapes, needles, dissectors, and instruments during procedures.
• Prepare for surgical cases by assembling necessary supplies and equipment according to preference cards, while identifying any potential conflicts or problems.
• Ensure proper care of instruments and supplies after each surgical case.
• Provide a safe surgical environment for the patient by identifying potential hazards to the surgical team, assisting the RN circulator in preoperative equipment checks.
• Display knowledge of potential hazards such as equipment, chemicals, or gases within the operating room environment.
• Utilize experienced operating room staff as a resource and provide guidance to new operating room personnel.
• Assist in suturing, retracting, and suctioning under the direction of the surgeon.
• Handle and identify specimens in accordance with established policies.
• Facilitate the effective and efficient turnover of the operating room between cases.
• Rotate on-call duties as required.
• Perform additional responsibilities as requested.

• Previous experience in an operating room environment.
• Experience as a Surgical Technologist.

• NBSTSA Certified Surgical Technologist (CST).
• BLS Certification (AHA, HSI, or American Red Cross).

Schedule Notes

General Operating Room Work Hours: Either 5, 8-hour shifts or 4, 10-hour shifts, with a daily shift ending at 11:30 PM (available shifts include 3 PM - 11:30 PM or 1 PM - 11:30 PM).

Call Hours: One weekend every 3 to 4 weeks (Saturday and Sunday, evening shift hours ending at 11:30 PM) as well as 1 to 2 night on-call shifts per week (11:30 PM - 7 AM), scheduled following shifts worked on the designated weekend.
