Director of Emergency Medicine

Job Description:

The Director of Emergency Medicine will oversee the operations of multiple emergency departments, ensuring the delivery of high-quality patient care and the achievement of departmental goals. The ideal candidate will be a confident and strong leader with a collaborative mindset and a commitment to fostering positive relationships within the healthcare team and with inpatient leaders.

Key Responsibilities:

• Provide leadership and oversight across multiple emergency departments.
• Coach and support unit managers and emerging leaders within the departments.
• Drive process improvement initiatives focused on workflow and triage efficiency.
• Collaborate with inpatient leaders to enhance patient care and operational outcomes.
• Monitor and respond to departmental metrics, including the “Left Without Being Seen” rate.
• Ensure effective utilization of Microsoft tools for reporting and data analysis.
• Build and maintain relationships to drive change and improvements in patient care.

Qualifications:

• Master’s degree in Nursing, Healthcare Administration, Business, or a related field.
• At least 5 years of progressive leadership experience in a clinical environment.
• Experience overseeing a large workforce, with a minimum of 200 employees.
• Proven experience in a Level I Trauma Center is required.
• Familiarity with electronic medical records, particularly EPIC, is highly preferred.
• Proficient in Microsoft tools, including Excel and Power BI.
• Active nursing license in Iowa or a compact state is required.

• Visible and present leadership to understand and adapt to the emergency department's operational rhythm.
• Support leaders and staff through transitions and enhancements in workflows.
• Foster collaboration among inpatient leaders and drive accountability across departments.

Goals for the First 6 Months:

• Implement process improvements on workflow and triage.
• Decrease the “Left Without Being Seen” rate to a target of 2%.
• Enhance morale and growth among inpatient leaders and staff across all emergency departments.

Challenges:

• Building collaboration among inpatient leaders to improve workflows across different departments.
• Addressing inconsistent leadership and providing clear direction to teams.
• Meeting departmental metrics and goals effectively.
