Description

Speech Language Pathologist (SLP)

The Speech Language Pathologist collaborates with residents and healthcare providers to deliver Speech Language Pathology services aimed at enhancing their function and independence in daily activities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Promotes the mission and values of the organization.
  • Performs evaluations and therapeutic procedures as directed by a physician or other healthcare provider, adhering to all necessary precautions, indications, and contraindications.
  • Conducts evaluations and treatments for communication disorders and dysphagia, including modified barium swallows.
  • Evaluates residents according to department protocols and establishes a therapeutic plan of care, which includes functional long- and short-term goals, specifying treatment frequency and duration.
  • Incorporates input from residents and primary caregivers into the therapeutic plan of care.
  • Provides consultation to referring physicians and healthcare team members regarding therapeutic and discharge needs of residents, attending all relevant team meetings.
  • Monitors treatment progress, modifying the treatment plan as necessary to achieve established functional goals.
  • Documents all evaluative and therapeutic interactions per departmental procedures, ensuring accessibility and clarity for other care team members.
  • Recommends and obtains appropriate communication and swallowing assistive devices, ensuring residents are instructed in their proper use.
  • Educates residents and caregivers, documenting responses to teaching.
  • Understands Medicare, Medicaid, and other reimbursement regulations.
  • Maintains clinical knowledge and skills, sharing expertise with colleagues.
  • Conducts in-services on clinical knowledge and skills for nursing and other departments.
  • Assists in developing new programs and services within Speech Therapy.
  • Stays current with professional updates through organizational memberships and professional publications, and brings pertinent topics to the team's attention.
  • Maintains required licenses, certifications, and competencies, completing annual compliance courses on time.
  • Coordinates and ensures coverage for Speech and Language services.
  • Ensures departmental cleanliness and maintenance, routinely keeping office and clinical areas clean and assisting with equipment and space cleaning, while following all infection control procedures.
  • Performs other duties consistent with the role as needed.

Job Requirements

Education and Experience

  • Master's degree in a relevant field required.
  • Speech & Language Pathologist license required.
  • Certificate of Clinical Competence required.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification preferred.
  • Prior experience in a long-term care or skilled nursing facility is preferred.

Working Conditions/Physical Demands

  • Must possess the physical and mental capabilities to perform tasks typically associated with this role, including sitting, standing, walking, bending, stooping, twisting, and reaching.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds, with assistance required for heavier weights.
  • Frequent lifting or carrying of items up to 20 pounds; some stress associated with a high level of responsibility for quality care.

Certifications / Requirements

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required.
