Description

Registered Nurse, Operating Room

Essential Functions:

  • Conduct interactions with individuals in a friendly, courteous, and respectful manner.
  • Proactively offer assistance; if unable, find someone who can help.
  • Advocate for privacy and confidentiality while encouraging awareness.
  • Maintain a clean and safe hospital environment.
  • Respond appropriately and immediately in emergency situations.
  • Ensure a safe and healthy environment for patients, visitors, and staff, maximizing comfort and minimizing risk and injury.
  • Ensure compliance with regulations to maintain required accreditation and licensure.
  • Adhere to Hospital Attendance and Tardiness Policies.
  • Complete all mandatory training and requirements annually.
  • Report incidents in a timely and effective manner.
  • Engage in the monitoring and enforcement of hand hygiene practices.
  • Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate nursing interventions and care plans for patients.
  • Provide care in accordance with established standards, protocols, and policies.
  • Respect each patient as an individual, fostering their dignity and positive self-regard.
  • Deliver patient and family teaching based on identified needs and readiness to learn.
  • Collaboratively plan and prepare patients and families for discharge, incorporating necessary support systems.
  • Delegate and supervise nursing interventions performed by others appropriately.
  • Prioritize patient care effectively, seeking assistance when necessary and recognizing the need for emergency interventions.
  • Document all pertinent data, therapeutic interventions, and patient responses accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Provide comprehensive reports on assigned patients to other healthcare team members for continuity of care.
  • Promote learning for colleagues and self by serving as a preceptor, instructor, or trainer, and attending professional development programs.
  • Identify risks to patient safety proactively and find opportunities to reduce medical errors.
  • Address ethical issues in care by developing appropriate plans.
  • Administer medications and intravenous therapy according to physician orders, protocols, and policies.
  • Assess and document patient pain levels upon admission, utilizing established pain assessment scales.
  • Reassess pain control effectiveness and notify physicians as needed, documenting assessments and patient responses.
  • Complete required documentation related to medication reconciliation for use by the attending physician.
  • Collaborate with the surgical team to ensure patient well-being during procedures.
  • Maintain sterile fields and oversee the care, handling, and sterilization of supplies and instruments.
  • Ensure accurate patient identification and procedure verification prior to surgical interventions.
  • Select and prepare necessary supplies and equipment for all surgical cases following aseptic principles.
  • Apply principles of body mechanics for safe patient positioning and transfer.
  • Ensure that all practices during surgical procedures meet perioperative standards.
  • Maintain proper counts of sponges, needles, and instruments according to policies, notifying the surgeon of results.
  • Handle specimens and cultures according to established policies and procedures.

Job Requirements:

  • Minimum Education: Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
  • Minimum Work Experience: Operating room nursing experience and CNOR certification preferred.
  • Required Licenses: Current RN license in the state of Massachusetts. ACLS certification upon hire, or an active BLS card with AHA ACLS certification obtained within 60 days of hire.
  • Required Skills: Ability to function in a fast-paced environment with competing priorities; excellent communication skills; ability to multitask; positive outlook.

Shift Information: 40-hour workweek, consisting of 4 ten-hour days with a call rotation.

Holiday Coverage: Required.

Minimum Years of Experience: Less than 1 year.

Certifications / Requirements: ACLS, BLS/BCLS.
