Description
The Speech Language Pathologist partners with residents and other care providers to deliver comprehensive Speech Language Pathology services aimed at maximizing residents' functional independence in daily activities.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Upholds the mission and values of the organization.
- Executes evaluative and therapeutic procedures under physician order while ensuring compliance with precautions and contraindications.
- Conducts assessments and provides treatment for communication disorders and dysphagia, including modified barium swallow studies.
- Evaluates residents and formulates a therapeutic plan of care that defines both short- and long-term functional goals, specifying treatment frequency and duration.
- Incorporates feedback from residents and primary caregivers into the therapeutic plan of care.
- Collaborates with the referring physician and multidisciplinary healthcare team on residents' therapeutic and discharge needs, participating in relevant team meetings.
- Monitors treatment effectiveness and adjusts the treatment plan as needed to achieve established functional goals.
- Maintains detailed records of evaluative and therapeutic interactions with residents, ensuring documentation is clear and accessible to the care team.
- Recommends or obtains communication and swallowing assistive devices, providing training on their use.
- Educates residents and caregivers, documenting their response to instruction.
- Understands Medicare, Medicaid, and other relevant reimbursement regulations.
- Continuously enhances clinical knowledge and shares expertise with colleagues.
- Conducts training sessions on clinical knowledge and skills for nursing and other departments.
- Contributes to the development of new programs and services in Speech Therapy.
- Stays informed about professional updates through memberships in organizations and professional literature, sharing relevant issues with the team.
- Maintains necessary licenses, certifications, and competencies; completes annual compliance training promptly.
- Ensures Speech and Language coverage is coordinated and effective.
- Maintains cleanliness and organization in clinical and office areas, adhering to infection control protocols.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements

- Fluent in English, with the ability to read, write, and follow written instructions.
Education and Experience
- Master's degree required.
- Speech & Language Pathologist license required.
- Certificate of Clinical Competence required.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification preferred.
- Prior experience in long-term care or skilled nursing settings preferred.
Working Conditions/Physical Demands
- Must possess the physical and mental abilities to perform tasks associated with the role, involving sitting, standing, walking, bending, stooping, twisting, and reaching.
- Able to lift up to 50 pounds. Lifting over 50 pounds requires assistance.
- Frequent lifting/carrying of up to 20 pounds. The role carries a level of responsibility for quality care, which can contribute to stress.
