Surgical Technologist Travel/Contract Position
Location: Madison, Wisconsin
Facility: UW Health University Hospital (Long Island Community Hospital system)
Specialty: Surgical Services
Contract Length: 17 weeks
Job Description
- Possible contract durations: 17 or 26 weeks
- Work Schedule: Nights, 12-hour shifts (1830 - 0700), Monday - Friday with variable days, no on-call required
- Floating: May be assigned to multiple units or locations depending on staffing needs
- Facility: Magnet®-designated, ranked Wisconsin’s #1 hospital, and a leading teaching and referral center
Experience & Education Requirements
- Minimum 2 years of scrub experience or equivalent relevant experience required
- Completion of a surgical technologist program preferred; 2 years of experience in Surgical Technologist role may be considered in lieu of formal education
Licensure & Certifications
- BLS certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) is mandatory
- ACLS, PALS, and National Tech Certification preferred or required depending on unit
- Other certifications may be required based on specialty/unit (e.g., telemetry exams for certain roles)
Role Summary
- Prepare the Operating Room prior to surgery
- Promote patient safety during surgery
- Assist surgeons during procedures
- Care for patients and surgical instruments during surgery
- Provide care for patients of all age groups (neonate to geriatric)
Facility Requirements
- Traveler’s permanent address must be within 50 miles of the primary work site
- Parking permit required for onsite parking; alternative transportation options available (bus, park & ride, private parking)
Compliance & Documentation Requirements
- Background check within 90 days prior to start, including nationwide and sex offender searches
- Employment application and skills checklist required annually
- Education verification or diploma/transcripts may be required if verification is not possible
- Wisconsin state-mandated BID form and caregiver screening required within 90 days of start
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required upon hire and monthly thereafter
- Drug screening required for clinical candidates per Vaya standard; pharmacy department candidates have additional requirements
- Physical exam recommended to meet Aya standards (not required by facility)
- Fit mask testing completed onsite
- Immunizations and health documents required:
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (required for some units)
- Negative TB test or chest x-ray within required timeframe
- MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) vaccination or titers, with medical/religious exemptions accepted
- Varicella vaccination or titer, with exemptions accepted
- Hepatitis B vaccination or declination form if applicable
- Flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required annually during flu season
- Meningococcal vaccine or declination for certain departments
- Facility-specific forms such as communicable disease, flu exemption, and pediatric/adult telemetry tests required as applicable
- Photo for badge must meet specific guidelines (passport-style, solid background, no headwear except religious/medical)
Testing & Competency Exams
- Telemetry exams (Adult and Pediatric) required for applicable specialties, with strict passing criteria and remediation process
- Medication/pharmacology competency exams as applicable
- Color blindness testing required for Laboratory or Dialysis roles
- Pass/fail testing for EKG/medication and other competencies as required

- Floating assignments may require flexibility to work in different units or locations
- The hospital is a Magnet® facility, emphasizing nursing excellence and quality patient care
- This is a travel/contract position with no call responsibilities
