Job Opportunity: Respiratory / Neuro Diagnostics (RRT / Pediatrics)

Location: Charleston, South Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Position Details

  • Specialty: Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) with Pediatrics focus
  • Shift: 3 shifts per week, 12-hour night shifts (7:00 PM - 7:30 AM)
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
  • On-call: Not required
  • Floating: May float within scope depending on experience; no floating to sister facilities

Experience & Certification Requirements

  • Minimum 2 years of experience required
  • Pediatric, Neonate, and Infant experience required
  • First-time travelers accepted
  • Certifications required:
    • RRT certification
    • BLS (Basic Life Support)
    • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
    • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
  • Licenses accepted: NBRC and South Carolina Respiratory Care Provider (SC RCP) license
  • South Carolina RRT license must be obtained before start date
  • Epic charting experience preferred

Schedule & Work Conditions

  • Holiday rotation included
  • Facility allows calling off 1 shift per 2 weeks
  • Radius rule: 60 miles; local hires considered case-by-case
  • Block scheduling may be accommodated with prior approval (not guaranteed)

Important Seasonal Note

  • During hurricane season (June - November, peak in August and September), all staff including travelers may be assigned to emergency response teams. Confirm availability before accepting assignments during this period.

Required Documentation & Compliance

  • Proof of work eligibility (I-9 form)
  • Valid Driver’s License/State ID
  • Social Security Card or SSN verification
  • Background checks including:
    • SSN Trace
    • County and statewide criminal checks (past 7 years)
    • Sex Offender Registry
    • National Criminal and FACIS 3
    • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 30 days of start and updated for renewals
  • Education verification or diploma/transcripts as placeholder
  • References: 2 clinical references or hospital evaluations
  • Employment application with complete work history including PTO and contract assignments
  • Annual background check required

Certifications & Competencies

  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) – AHA only; not required for pediatric units but may be required for some adult critical care areas
  • BLS – AHA or ARC required for all clinical staff
  • PALS – Required for all pediatric units except Pediatric OR; preferred for Pediatric OR
  • NRP – Must be through AHA/AAP with full eCard and QR code
  • TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course) – Required as applicable; not required for ER RNs
  • EFM (Electronic Fetal Monitoring) – AWHONN or NCC; required for Labor & Delivery, preferred for Mother/Baby, not required for NICU
  • Medication/Pharmacology competency exams as applicable
  • Color Blind Testing required prior to start
  • Competency exams required; pediatric OR competency preferred for Pediatric OR staff
  • Tech Certification Verification (e.g., NBRC for RRT) required and must be current

Licensure

  • South Carolina RRT license required before start
  • Primary source verification of active, unencumbered license required
  • NURSYS verification for RNs and LPNs/LVNs as applicable
  • Walk-through (temporary) license option available for SC RN license applicants without background issues
  • All licensure hits must be approved by facility

Health & Safety Requirements

  • Physical exam attesting ability to meet job demands, updated annually
  • Fit test for N95 mask (O&M Halyard FLUIDSHIELD or 3M Aura 1870+) within 90 days prior to start, renewed annually
  • Tdap vaccine within 10 years or declination form required
  • Negative TB test (T-spot or Q-Gold) within 90 days or proof of prior positive with chest x-ray
  • Annual TB questionnaire required
  • Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella: Positive titer or vaccination series required; low titers require boosters
  • Hepatitis B: Titer, vaccine series, or declination required
  • Drug screening: 10-panel urine drug screen within 90 days of start; no instant tests accepted
  • Seasonal flu vaccine or medical/religious exemption required during flu season (Aug 1 - Apr 30)
  • COVID-19 vaccine highly preferred; declination form required if not vaccinated
  • Respiratory safety clearance and fit testing required; PAPR not provided by facility
  • Sterile Processing Techs require additional physical assessment and lab panels

Facility Specific Requirements

  • Completion of orientation modules (approx. 2 hours) prior to start; must be done on a computer, not a phone
  • Upload COVID and flu vaccine documentation into facility system prior to start
  • Passport-style badge photo required before start
  • Radiation badge required for certain specialties (not applicable for RRT)
  • All required documents must be submitted and approved prior to start

Additional Notes

  • All requested time off (RTO) must be submitted with application and approved based on unit needs
  • Facility may call off shifts as needed; guaranteed hours subject to facility discretion
  • Travelers must comply with all facility policies and documentation requirements to maintain clearance

This position offers an opportunity to work in a high-acuity pediatric teaching hospital with a focus on respiratory therapy in a travel/contract capacity. Candidates must be prepared to meet strict licensure, certification, and health compliance standards.
