Unit Description
- 17 James Medical Oncology - Day/Night rotating shifts (12-hour shifts)
- Oncology experience preferred but not required
- Staffing ratios goal: 1:4 (can be 1:5)
- Variable weekends based on unit needs
- No set/blocked scheduling; self-scheduling requests submitted and balanced by management
- Shift assignments reviewed every 4 weeks; days, nights, or combination depending on department needs
Contract Length
- 16 weeks
Orientation
- Week 1: Monday to Friday, day shift orientation
- Week 2: 36 hours on-unit orientation with a preceptor
Experience Required
- Minimum 2 years of nursing experience

- Patients receiving antineoplastic chemotherapy
Unit Details
- Cares for all solid tumor cancers from diagnosis through treatment and end-of-life care
- Heavy focus on infection prevention and patient fall prevention
- Patients may have medical-surgical issues
- Floating to other MedSurg Oncology units required
Required Certifications
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
Preferred Certifications
- ONS Chemo (Oncology Nursing Society Chemotherapy Certification)
Skills Required
- Telemetry interpretation and monitoring
Charting System
- EPIC electronic medical records
Previous Travel Experience

Compliance and Credentialing Requirements
Background Checks
- 7-year criminal background check within 90 days of start (includes SS trace, counties lived/worked, nationwide, sex offender, MVR if driving)
- FBI and BCI fingerprinting required prior to start; must be completed using specific Ohio codes
- Monthly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG monitoring
- Education accreditation verification required (accredited nursing programs only)
- Transcript/Diploma verification required
- Pending background check attestation allowed if fingerprint results are pending
Certifications
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) may be required depending on unit
- PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) required for ER and certain units
- NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) required for Labor & Delivery, Post-Partum, OB
- EFM (Electronic Fetal Monitoring) certification requirements vary
- Orientation Safety Manual Acknowledgement required annually
- State nursing license verification within 30 days of start
- NURSYS verification required for RNs
- NIH Stroke Certification required for ER and critical care RNs (varies by unit)
- Tech Cert Verification required within 30 days for applicable roles
- Medication Test/Pharmacology Competency Exam required for all RN/LVN candidates prior to start
- Unit-specific competency exams required
- Dysrhythmia/EKG Competency Exam required within 1 year of start and annually thereafter (with remediation process if failed)
Health Requirements
- Physical exam within 1 year of start confirming good health and free of contagious disease
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap vaccine (adult dose after age 11/12)
- Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year; TB questionnaire required annually
- MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) - 2 vaccines or positive titer required; boosters if low titer
- Hepatitis B titer or 3-vaccine series (declination acceptable)
- Varicella - 2 vaccines or positive titer required; medical exemptions reviewed
- Negative 10-panel drug screen within 3 months of start (includes amphetamines, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, cannabinoids, cocaine, methadone, methaqualone, opiates, PCP, propoxyphene)
- Seasonal flu vaccine or declination required during flu season (10/1 - 3/31); decliners must wear mask
- COVID-19 vaccine not required but strongly recommended
