Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (Radiation Oncology)

Location: Washington, District of Columbia
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Description

  • Specialty: Radiation Oncology
  • Shift: 08:00 AM - 05:00 PM
  • Patient Population: Primarily cancer patients including prostate, breast, colorectal, cervical/endometrial, head and neck, and lung cancers
  • Primary Diagnoses: Cancer-related conditions
  • Responsibilities:
    • Care and management of ports, central/implanted lines
    • Management of Acute Tumor Lysis Syndrome (ATLS), anaphylaxis, extravasation injury, hemorrhage, sepsis, spinal cord compression
    • Neutropenic precautions, tracheostomy care/management
    • External radiation therapy (teletherapy) and radiation safety precautions
    • Management of altered mental status, constipation/diarrhea, dysphagia, edema, nausea/vomiting, neuropathy
    • Starting IVs in adults
    • Chart preparation, disability forms, pharmacy calls, telephone triage
    • New consults for radiation, simulation education, treatment-related education, side effect management, dental referrals
    • Collaboration with social workers and nutritionists
  • Charting System: Cerner

Requirements

  • Licensure: Must have a valid District of Columbia RN license at time of submission
  • Experience: Minimum 2 years nursing experience required
  • Must have completed at least 1 travel assignment or screening if less experience
  • Certifications:
    • BLS (Basic Life Support) required (AHA or ARC)
    • ACLS, PALS, NRP, TNCC, EFM, and other certifications may be required based on unit or specialty
  • Competencies:
    • Medication/Pharmacology competency exam (pass with 80% or higher) within 3 years
    • Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required for specific units, with remediation process if needed
    • Color Blind Testing (online or in-person)
  • Background Checks:
    • Criminal background check within 90 days including all locations lived/worked/schooled in past 7 years
    • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks prior to start and monthly thereafter
    • Education verification of highest degree required by position
  • Health Requirements:
    • Annual physical exam confirming ability to work without accommodations and free from communicable disease
    • Negative TB test or chest x-ray within required timeframes
    • Immunizations or titers for MMR (measles, mumps, rubella), Varicella, Hepatitis B, Tdap (preferred within 10 years)
    • Drug screen within 90 days of start (excluding marijuana), updated annually
    • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption required during flu season
    • COVID-19 vaccination strongly recommended; declination requires mask use during patient encounters
    • N95 fit test within 9 months of start and updated annually (client may complete onsite if needed)

Additional Information

  • Two positive supervisory references required, including one from the most recent assignment, supporting at least two years of experience within the last three years
  • Complete 7 years of work history with no gaps, including education, employment, license, and contact information
  • Skills checklist required prior to start and updated annually
  • Facility-specific modules (SITELS) must be completed before hire date; these may take multiple hours
  • Photo for badge required (clear, well-lit, solid background, no filters or glare)

This position offers an opportunity to work in a specialized oncology setting with a focus on radiation therapy and comprehensive cancer patient care. Candidates must be prepared to meet rigorous certification, competency, and health screening requirements.
