Description

Job Opportunity: Corrections Nurse - Minneapolis, MN

Specialty: Corrections
Location: Minneapolis, Minnesota
Employment Type: Long Term
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Shift Details

  • Shift Time: 10:30 PM – 7:00 AM
  • Schedule includes nights, every other weekend, and holidays
  • No on-call required
  • 8-hour shifts with overtime available almost daily

Typical Shift Duties & Responsibilities

Pre-Shift (10:20 PM - 10:30 PM):

  • Grab keys, clock-in, check assignments
  • Prepare radio and cellphone
  • Check email

Shift Change Report (10:30 PM):

  • Attend report in conference room

After Report:

  • Sharps and narcotics count in medication carts and drawers
  • Notify previous shift when counts are clear
  • Check code cart and lab book for PT/INR lab work
  • Perform quality control on glucometers and Clinitek UPT machine
  • Record vaccine and lab refrigerator temperatures
  • End of month: update MARs and monthly forms
  • DOC transfers on Tuesday and Thursday nights (copy MARs for discharge staff)
  • Print work list and prepare medication setup/check before rounds
  • Prepare RORs for patients refusing medication for 3 days

Assessments Throughout Shift:

  • Complete worklist tasks such as CIWA, CIWA-B, COWS, Mental Status, and vital signs
  • Avoid waking patients unless necessary (e.g., CIWA or neuro checks)

Medication Setup:

  • Review medication books nightly for 5:00 AM timed meds
  • Remove extra medications and return to pharmacy
  • Coordinate with deputies regarding court and OTC meds

Medication Rounds (4:30 AM):

  • Sign off on each medication at administration
  • Report PT-INR labs to day shift charge nurse if unavailable
  • Check blood glucose and administer insulin to diabetic patients
  • Perform worklist tasks and assessments

Post Medication Rounds:

  • Check MARs for missed meds or refusals
  • Complete charting and acknowledge/transcribe orders before 6:30 AM
  • Clean and restock medication cart and workspace

Shift End (6:30 AM):

  • Prepare end of shift report for oncoming nurse
  • Complete remaining tasks and check email
