Registered Nurse (IMC / IICU) - Columbia, South Carolina

Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Summary

  • Position in Intermediate Intensive Care (IMC/IICU) caring for adult patients including trauma, medical, surgical, and neurology cases.
  • Unit acuity ratio: 1:3.
  • Patients require monitoring or interventions every 1–2 hours.
  • Unit receives direct admissions, ICU transfers, and escalations from Rapid Response Teams.
  • Special equipment includes Hercules patient re-positioners, ceiling lifts, and Airtaps.

Experience & Requirements

  • Minimum 2 years RN experience.
  • At least 1 completed travel assignment required.
  • Previous IICU/ICU experience with acuity of at least 1:3 required.
  • Ventilator experience required.
  • Medication management skills including titration of cardiac and vasoactive drips.
  • Proficiency in cardiac monitoring, emergency response, dysrhythmia interpretation, and telemetry monitoring.
  • Progressive care settings experience (PCU, DOU, IMC, Stepdown) considered.
  • Must have 3 years of specialty experience for first-time travelers with critical care experience.
  • Weekend requirement: 6 weekend shifts per 6-week schedule.
  • Floating required as needed to other qualified units or campuses.
  • Charting experience: 1 year EPIC required.
  • Must have an active South Carolina or multistate nursing license (no pending licenses accepted).

Certifications Required

  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) - AHA or ARC only, valid and not expiring within 30 days of start.
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) - AHA, RQI, or ARC only, valid and not expiring within 30 days of start.
  • NIH Stroke Certification - Required annually, valid and not expiring within 30 days of start.
  • Other certifications may be required depending on unit (e.g., PALS, NRP, TNCC, ENPC, CPI, STABLE) — check unit specifics.
  • Medication and Arrhythmia competency testing required.
  • Pass/Fail Testing (EKG/Medication) required for all RN candidates except pre-book.

Licensure & Background

  • Primary source verification of nursing license required.
  • Background check: 7-year history within 12 months of start, including SS trace, aliases, state and county searches.
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start and every 30 days thereafter.
  • Fingerprinting required if applicable (e.g., if lived/worked in WV in last 7 years).
  • Education verification required; diplomas not accepted as placeholders.
  • Drug screening: 5-panel within 1 year, updated annually.

Health & Immunization Requirements

  • Physical exam within 1 year attesting ability to meet job demands.
  • Negative TB test (2-step PPD, QF Gold, or Tspot) within 90 days of start.
  • Immunizations or positive titers required for: Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B.
  • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap vaccine required for high-risk areas.
  • Seasonal flu vaccine or approved exemption required annually.
  • COVID-19 vaccine no longer required.

Orientation & Training

  • Online orientation modules must be completed within 72 hours of assignment.
  • 16 hours of non-billable orientation onsite.
  • Pre-assignment testing (medication and EKG) must be completed within 72 hours of receiving login.
  • Badge photo required prior to start.
  • Floating policy acknowledgment required.

  • Facility is a Level I Adult and Level II Pediatric Trauma Center.
  • Magnet-recognized for nursing excellence.
  • Facility prioritizes keeping staff in home unit but requires floating as needed.
  • Call-off policy allows 1 shift call-off per 2 weeks.
  • Locals accepted with radius rule applied.

This position is ideal for experienced critical care nurses with strong ICU/IICU skills, ventilator experience, and proficiency in telemetry and cardiac monitoring, seeking a travel contract in a high-acuity, teaching hospital environment.
