Description

Registered Nurse (IMC / IICU) - Columbia, South Carolina

Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Summary

  • Position in Intermediate Intensive Care Unit (IICU) / Intermediate Medical Care (IMC)
  • Adult patient population including trauma, medical, surgical, and neurology cases
  • Unit acuity ratio: 1:3
  • Unit receives direct admissions, ICU transfers, and escalations from Rapid Response Teams
  • Special equipment includes patient re-positioners, ceiling lifts, and Airtaps

Experience & Requirements

  • Minimum 2 years RN experience
  • At least 1 completed travel assignment required
  • Previous IICU/ICU experience with acuity of at least 1:3 required
  • Ventilator experience required
  • Medication management skills including titration of cardiac and vasoactive drips
  • Proficient in cardiac monitoring, emergency response, dysrhythmia interpretation, and telemetry monitoring
  • Progressive care settings experience (PCU, DOU, IMC, Stepdown) considered
  • 1 year of EPIC charting experience required
  • Must have critical care experience for first-time travelers (3 years specialty experience required)

Scheduling & Work Conditions

  • Weekend Requirement: 6 weekend shifts per 6-week schedule period
  • Floating required to other units or campuses as needed (limited to qualified areas)
  • Facility may call off 1 shift per 2 weeks
  • Locals accepted (radius rule applies)
  • Must have active South Carolina or multistate nursing license (no pending licenses accepted)

Required Certifications

  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) - AHA or ARC only, cannot expire within 30 days of start
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) - AHA, RQI, or ARC only, cannot expire within 30 days of start
  • NIH Stroke Certification - required annually, cannot expire within 30 days of start
  • Other certifications may be required depending on unit (e.g., PALS, NRP, TNCC, CPI, MAB)
  • Certification cards (not just proof of completion) required at start

Compliance & Testing

  • Background check: 7-year history within 12 months of start, including multiple state and county searches
  • Drug screen: 5-panel within 1 year, updated annually
  • Physical exam: within 1 year, must attest ability to meet physical demands
  • Immunizations and health documents required:
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (within 10 years for high-risk areas)
    • Negative TB test or chest X-ray (within 90 days)
    • Rubeola, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella (positive titer or 2 vaccines)
    • Hepatitis B vaccination series, positive titer, or signed declination
    • Seasonal Flu vaccine or approved exemption (deadline applies)
  • Respirator fit test completed onsite during orientation
  • Pre-assignment testing and online orientation modules required (must be completed timely)
  • Medication and arrhythmia competency exams required for applicable units
  • Annual core competencies and training (Parts I, II, III) required

Additional Notes

  • Floating policy must be signed and renewed annually
  • Badge photo required prior to start (passport style, specific background and lighting)
  • Online orientation modules must be completed within 72 hours of assignment
  • Pass/fail testing for EKG and medication required for RNs in critical care and telemetry units
  • Facility is a Level I Adult and Level II Pediatric Trauma Center, Magnet-recognized for nursing excellence

This position is ideal for experienced critical care nurses with strong ICU/IICU skills, ventilator experience, and proficiency in telemetry and medication management, seeking a travel contract in a high-acuity, teaching hospital environment.
