Description

Job Opportunity: Med-Surg Telemetry RN

Location

  • Berlin, VT
  • Facility has 122 beds total, with 51 beds on the Med-Surg Telemetry unit
  • Trauma Level 3 facility
  • No public transportation available; reliable personal or rental vehicle strongly recommended
  • Free onsite parking available

Unit Details

  • Unit: Med-Surg with Telemetry
  • Nurse-to-patient ratio:
    • Days: 1 nurse per 3-5 patients
    • Nights: 1 nurse per 4-6 patients
  • Ancillary support:
    • CNA/PCT (LNAs) assigned at 1:8-10 ratio
    • Unit secretary available 6am-10pm most days
    • Charge nurse 24/7 without patient assignment
  • Floating required but infrequent; floats to like units
  • No charge nurse responsibilities required for this role
  • Scheduling via online system; schedules published in advance
  • Shift hours: 12-hour shifts with option to pick up extra 8-hour shifts
  • Weekend requirement: every other weekend
  • Holiday requirement: must work 2 out of 4 major holidays (Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas, New Year’s Day)
  • No call requirements
  • No self-scheduling or block schedules

Patient Population & Care

  • Adult patients with telemetry needs
  • Common diagnoses: post-op ortho, post-op urology and GI, COPD, CHF, diabetes, dementia, end-of-life care, and various acute medical/surgical conditions (excluding psych, ICU, Women & Children’s)
  • Telemetry RN must be able to apply, interpret, and respond to telemetry rhythms actively
  • Unit uses Epic for documentation and Pyxis for medication management
  • Special equipment includes Sigma IV pumps, CAAD PCA pumps, Kangaroo tube feed pumps, GE EKG machines, Stryker beds, Mindray cardiac monitors, Hill-Rom nurse call system
  • Respiratory therapy and anesthesia support available 24/7
  • Ventilator management by respiratory therapists (RT)

Required Experience & Certifications

  • Minimum 2 years clinical experience, with at least 1 year in med-surg telemetry
  • Telemetry certification required
  • BLS and ACLS certifications required
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification required prior to starting
  • 5 years med-surg telemetry experience OR 3 years telemetry experience required
  • Prior travel experience required: must have completed 2 travel assignments in 300+ bed facilities OR have previous experience at any University of Vermont Health Network acute care facility
  • Epic experience within the past 2 years is mandatory
  • Peripheral IV insertion and NG tube insertion skills required
  • Ability to interpret telemetry strips and take appropriate action

Orientation & Work Environment

  • Orientation: 1-2 precepted shifts plus time with educators before patient contact
  • Team-oriented unit with collaboration among RNs, LPNs, and LNAs
  • Professional dress code: scrubs (own or provided), closed-toe non-skid shoes, minimal jewelry, groomed hair/beard, no artificial nails
  • Reliable vehicle preferred due to housing options sometimes 15 minutes away
  • On-call rooms reserved for on-call staff only unless hospital emergency declared

Contract Length

  • 16 weeks (interpreted as 16 weeks)

Note: This position requires full and detailed work history including bed count, EMR, and facility type to be submitted. Employment gaps over 90 days must be explained. Seasonal tires recommended November through April due to weather conditions.
