Job Summary: Med-Surg Telemetry RN
Location: Berlin, VT
Facility Type: Acute Care Medical-Surgical Unit with Telemetry
Unit Beds: 51 beds
Facility Beds: 122 beds
Trauma Level: 3
Contract Length: 32 weeks (approximately 8 months)
Start Date: Must start by 12/22
Unit & Patient Population
- Unit: Med-Surg with Telemetry
- Patient Population: Adults with telemetry needs, post-op ortho, post-op urology and GI, COPD, CHF, diabetes, end-of-life care, dementia, placement needs
- Exclusions: No psych, ICU, or Women & Children’s patients
- Patient Care Modality: Acute medical-surgical with telemetry monitoring
- Telemetry: RN must be certified and experienced in applying, interpreting, and responding to telemetry strips
Experience & Certification Requirements
- Minimum 5 years of med-surg telemetry experience OR 3 years of telemetry experience
- Prior travel experience required
- Must have completed 2 travel assignments in 300+ bed facilities OR previous experience at any UVMHN acute care facility
- EPIC experience within the past 2 years is required
- Certifications required:
- AHA BLS
- AHA ACLS
- NIHSS (must be completed prior to starting)
- Telemetry certification preferred
- Peripheral IV placement preferred
Orientation & Training
- 1-2 precepted shifts plus time with educators before patient contact
- Bi-weekly orientations (Monday sessions)
Work Environment & Schedule
- Nurse-to-patient ratio:
- Days: 3-5 patients per nurse
- Nights: 4-6 patients per nurse
- Ancillary support:
- CNA/PCT support with LNAs assigned at 1:8-10 ratio
- Unit secretary available 6am-10pm most days
- Charge nurse 24/7 (no patient assignment)
- Shift hours: 12-hour shifts with option to pick up extra 8-hour shifts
- Weekend requirement: Every other weekend
- Holiday requirement: Must work 2 out of 4 major holidays (Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas, New Year’s Day)
- Floating: Required but infrequent; float to like units
- Scheduling: Online system, schedules published in advance by manager
- No self-scheduling or block schedules
Unit Specifics & Equipment
- Procedures performed by bedside RN:
- NG tube insertion
- Peripheral IV insertion
- Telemetry strip interpretation and response
- Equipment used:
- Sigma IV pumps
- CAAD PCA pumps
- Kangaroo tube feed pumps
- GE EKG machines
- Stryker beds
- Mindray cardiac monitors
- Hill-Rom nurse call system
- Respiratory and anesthesia support available 24/7
- Ventilator management by Respiratory Therapists (RT)
Additional Information
- Team-oriented unit with collaboration among RNs, LPNs, and LNAs
- Professional dress code: scrubs (own or provided), closed-toe non-skid shoes, minimal jewelry, groomed hair/beard, no artificial nails
- Documentation system: EPIC
- Medication system: Pyxis
- Reliable personal vehicle strongly recommended due to limited public transportation and housing options up to 15 minutes away
- Free onsite parking available
- On-call rooms reserved for on-call staff only unless emergency
Important Notes
- Must explain any employment gaps over 90 days
- Complete work history including bed count, EMR, and facility type required for submission
- Vehicles should have all-season or snow tires November through April due to weather conditions
This position is ideal for experienced Med-Surg Telemetry RNs with strong telemetry skills, recent EPIC experience, and prior travel assignments in larger acute care settings.
