Neuro Med-Surg Acute RN Position

Location: Peoria, Illinois
Unit: Neuro Med-Surg Acute
Beds: 54 (2 semi-private)
Shift: 12-hour shifts (7:00 AM - 7:00 PM), 3 shifts per week
Schedule:

• Every other weekend required (Saturday and Sunday both shifts)
• Every other holiday required
• Weekend and holiday rotations apply

Patient Population & Unit Details

• Common diagnoses: Stroke, spine surgery, seizure, brain tumor, head injury, various neuroscience cases, some medical overflow
• Nurse-to-patient ratios:

  • Day shift: 1:4-5
  • Night shift: 1:5-6
• Nurse aides/patient care tech ratios:

  • Day & evening: 1:9-10
  • Night: 1:10-12
• Telemetry: House-wide telemetry with Phillips monitors; nurses do not read their own strips
• Respiratory equipment: High flow oxygen for stable COVID patients (rare); RNs troubleshoot only

Requirements & Qualifications

• Must have Level 1 trauma experience
• Must have prior travel nursing experience (no first-time travelers)
• Prior experience on a dedicated neuro unit required
• Required certifications:

  • BLS (AHA)
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
• Active Illinois nursing license or proof of application in process
• Must be able to titrate drips, including heparin drip based on PTT (heparin drip experience required)
• Must comply with drug-free campus policy (negative drug screen required)

Orientation & Training

• Orientation length: 2 days (unit-specific and computer training)
• Orientation includes educator support and preceptorship with patient care

Additional Unit Information

• Charge nurse present 24/7; generally does not take patient assignments unless short staffed
• House supervisor available 24/7
• Floating: Nurses float in rotation with staff; travelers float to general unit floor; if floated outside general unit, only assigned tasks within competency and with trained nurse support
• Dress code: No specific scrub color required; tattoos must be covered; only ear piercings allowed

Contract Length

• 13 weeks (approximately 3 months)

Notes

• Local placements accepted within a 50-mile radius
• Non-billable orientation hours: 12 hours (guaranteed hours do not apply during orientation)
• Call or standby shifts: None required
• OSF Call Off Policy: Equivalent of 12 hours off every 13 weeks with no penalty or pay required for missed shifts
