Registered Nurse (Travel/Contract) - Columbus, Ohio
Assignment Details
- Specialty: Registered Nurse
- Location: Columbus, Ohio
- Employment Type: Travel/Contract
- Contract Length: 16 weeks (approximately 4 months)
- Unit: Medical Oncology Progressive Care Unit (PCU) - High Acuity, Nights (Day/Night shift option available)
- Unit Description:
- 36-bed Oncology Telemetry unit with over 24 beds dedicated to PCU level of care
- Mix of medical oncology, progressive care beds, and some med-surg
- Pediatric patients are rare and typically cared for by permanent staff (pediatric experience not required)
- High acuity PCU patient experience required
- Heavy focus on infection prevention and patient fall protocols
Schedule & Orientation
- Self-scheduling requests accepted before final schedule is posted
- Orientation:
- Week 1: Monday to Friday, day shift orientation
- Week 2: 36 hours of on-unit orientation with a preceptor

Required Experience & Certifications
- Oncology experience preferred but not required (2 years preferred)
- Required certifications:
- Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS)
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
- NIH Stroke Certification
- Previous travel experience preferred
Staffing Ratios
- Med Surg Telemetry: 1 nurse to 4-5 patients
- PCU: 1 nurse to 3 patients
- Required to float within units of equivalent or lower acuity
Skills Required
- Interpretation of dysrhythmias
- Use of rapid response teams
- Feeding tube care and management
- Accessing ports
- Blood product administration
- Central line and peripheral line care/management
- PICC line management
- Starting IVs
- Heparin protocols
- Managing cardiac drips (no titration)
- PCA pumps
- Titration of cardiac drips
- Chest tubes (Emerson/Pleur-evac)
- External CPAP/BIPAP
- High Flow Nasal Cannula (HFNC)
- Interpretation of ABGs
- Nasal cannula use
- Tracheostomy management

Background & Compliance Requirements
- 7-year criminal background check within 90 days of start (including FBI/BCI fingerprinting)
- Monthly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG monitoring
- Education accreditation verification required (accredited nursing programs only)
- Ohio BCI & FBI fingerprinting required within 1 year of start, with specific fingerprinting codes and procedures
- Pending background check attestation required if fingerprint results are pending
- Drug testing: Negative 10-panel drug screen within 3 months of start (no pending drug screens allowed)
- Physical exam within 1 year of start confirming good health and free of contagious disease
- Immunizations and health documents required:
- Tdap (adult dose)
- Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year
- TB questionnaire
- MMR (Rubeola, Mumps, Rubella) - 2 vaccines or positive titer
- Hepatitis B titer or 3-vaccine series (declination acceptable)
- Varicella - 2 vaccines or positive titer (medical exemption possible)
- Seasonal flu vaccine or declination (mask required if declining)
- COVID-19 vaccination not required but recommended
Certifications & Competencies
- BLS (Basic Life Support) - AHA only
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) - AHA only
- NIH Stroke Certification (required for most ICU, PCU, and ED units)
- Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required within 1 year of start and updated annually (minimum passing score 76%)
- Unit-specific competency exams required
- Medication test/pharmacology competency exam required prior to start
Additional Requirements
- 2 professional references required (at least one from a manager or formal leadership)
- Employment application required including education verification
- Skills checklist required
- Annual orientation safety manual acknowledgement
- Compliance with dress code and hand hygiene policies
- Completion of fraud, waste, and abuse training certificate prior to start and annually
- Ethics and compliance policies review and acknowledgement annually
