Unit Description
- Medical Oncology Unit (17 James)
- Focus on solid tumor cancers: breast, lung, prostate, pancreatic, colon, esophageal cancers, and antineoplastic chemotherapy encounters
- Care spans from new diagnosis through treatment to end-of-life care
- Heavy emphasis on infection prevention and patient fall prevention
- Patients may have medical-surgical issues alongside oncology care
Experience Requirements
- Minimum 2 years of nursing experience
- Oncology experience preferred but not required
Patient Population
- Adults and Geriatrics
Staffing Ratios & Scheduling
- Goal staffing ratio: 1 nurse to 4 patients (can be up to 1:5)
- Weekends variable based on unit needs
- No set/blocked scheduling; self-scheduling requests submitted and balanced by management
- Shift: 12-hour day/night rotating shifts; assignments reviewed every 4 weeks but subject to change based on staffing needs
Orientation
- Week 1: Monday-Friday day shift orientation
- Week 2: 36 hours on-unit orientation with a preceptor
Certifications Required
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
Certifications Preferred
- ONS Chemo (Oncology Nursing Society Chemotherapy Certification)
Skills Required
- Telemetry interpretation and monitoring
Charting System
- EPIC electronic medical records
Additional Job Details
- Floating to other MedSurg Oncology units required
- Previous travel nursing experience preferred
Compliance & Credentialing Requirements
Background Checks
- 7-year criminal background check within 90 days of start (including SS trace, counties lived/worked, nationwide, sex offender, MVR if driving)
- FBI and BCI fingerprinting required within 1 year of start; must be completed with specific code (3701.881)
- Monthly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG monitoring
- Education accreditation verification required for nursing programs (CCNE, ACEN, NLN CNEA, CASN)
- Transcript or diploma verification required
- Pending background check attestation allowed if fingerprint results are pending
Health Documents
- Physical exam within 1 year stating good health and free of contagious disease
- Immunizations/vaccinations required:
- Tdap (adult dose after age 11/12)
- Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year (or TB questionnaire)
- MMR (2 vaccines or positive titer for Rubeola, Mumps, Rubella)
- Hepatitis B titer or 3-vaccine series (declination acceptable)
- Varicella (2 vaccines or positive titer; medical exemption possible)
- Seasonal flu vaccine or declination during flu season (10/1 - 3/31)
- Negative 10-panel drug screen within 3 months of start (amphetamines, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, cannabinoids, cocaine, methadone, methaqualone, opiates, PCP, propoxyphene)
- COVID vaccination not required but recommended; proof of primary vaccination collected if available
Competency Exams & Training
- Medication test/pharmacology competency exam required prior to start
- Unit-specific competency exam required
- Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required within 1 year of start and updated annually (minimum passing score 76%)
- Annual orientation safety manual acknowledgement
- Fraud, waste, and abuse training certificate required prior to start and updated annually
Additional Certifications (Check unit-specific requirements)
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) may be required depending on unit
- PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) required for ER and related units
- NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) required for L&D, Post-Partum, OB units
- EFM (Electronic Fetal Monitoring) certification as applicable
References & Documentation
- Two professional references required; at least one from a manager or formal leadership
