Description

Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (Travel/Contract)

Location: Washington, District of Columbia
Facility Type: Short Term Acute Care, Teaching Hospital
Unit: ED Boarder - IMC (Intermediate Care)
Shift: 3x12 hour night shifts (1900 - 0730)
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Description

  • Provide care for admitted patients boarding in the Emergency Department awaiting inpatient bed placement.
  • Patient ratio approximately 1:4-5.
  • Required to float within units of equivalent or lower acuity.
  • Weekend requirement: every other weekend.

Experience & Licensure Requirements

  • Minimum 2 years nursing experience.
  • Must have completed at least 1 prior travel assignment.
  • DC RN license required prior to start date (pending DC license accepted with proof at submission).

Required Certifications

  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)
  • DC RN Licensure (or pending with proof)

Required Skills

  • Cerner electronic health record system
  • MS/Telemetry and Telemetry monitoring
  • Interpretation and management of dysrhythmias
  • IV insulin protocols and titration of insulin drips
  • Feeding tube care and management
  • Pre/Post Hemodialysis management
  • Renal failure care
  • IV therapy/phlebotomy and starting IVs
  • Heparin protocols
  • PCA (Patient Controlled Analgesia)
  • Nasal cannula use
  • Isolation precautions

Preferred Skills

  • Cardiac telemetry
  • ER holding area experience
  • PCU/DOU/IMC/Stepdown units experience

  • Unit size: 40 rooms
  • Scrubs: Any color allowed
  • COVID-19: Must be willing and able to accept assignments including COVID-19 patients

Compliance & Onboarding Requirements

  • Criminal background check within 90 days, including multi-state and federal searches.
  • E-Verify and I9 documentation required.
  • Drug screen within 90 days of start (excluding marijuana).
  • Annual physical exam confirming ability to work without accommodations and free from communicable disease.
  • Immunizations and health documents required:
    • Tdap vaccine within 10 years preferred
    • Negative TB test or chest x-ray within required timeframe
    • MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) documentation or titers
    • Hepatitis B titer, series, or declination
    • Varicella documentation or titer
    • Seasonal flu vaccine or approved exemption required during flu season
    • COVID-19 vaccination strongly recommended; declination requires mask use
  • N95 fit test within 9 months of start and updated annually (client may complete onsite if needed).
  • Completion of facility-specific modules (SITELS) prior to hire date.
  • Medication and pharmacology competency exams required within 3 years, with minimum passing scores.
  • Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required annually with remediation if needed.
  • Two positive supervisory references supporting at least 2 years of experience within the last 3 years.
  • Complete 7 years of work history with no gaps, including education and license verification.
  • Skills checklist required prior to start and updated annually.

Additional Notes

  • Must provide clear photo for badge issuance.
  • Must be able to float to other units of similar or lower acuity.
  • Weekend work every other weekend is mandatory.
  • Must be able to work night shifts as scheduled.

This position is ideal for experienced travel RNs with strong telemetry and critical care skills who are comfortable working in a fast-paced ED boarding environment.
