Job Opportunity: Respiratory Therapist (RRT) - Pediatrics
Location: Charleston, South Carolina
Facility Type: Teaching Hospital, Magnet, Level 1 Trauma
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Position Details
- Specialty: Respiratory / Neuro Diagnostics
- Role: Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) - Pediatrics
- Shift: 3 shifts per week, 12-hour night shifts (7:00 PM - 7:30 AM)
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
- On-call: No
- Floating: May float within scope depending on experience; no floating to sister facilities
Experience & Certification Requirements
- Minimum 2 years of experience required
- Pediatric, Neonate, and Infant experience required
- First-time travelers accepted
- Certifications required:
- RRT certification
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
- NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
- Licenses accepted: NBRC and South Carolina Respiratory Care Provider (SC RCP)
- Epic charting experience preferred
Scheduling & Work Conditions
- Open to block scheduling with prior approval (not guaranteed)
- Radius rule: 60 miles
- Local candidates accepted on a case-by-case basis
- South Carolina RRT license must be active and in hand at start
- Guaranteed hours: Facility may call off 1 shift per 2 weeks
- Hurricane season (June-November) may require emergency response team participation

Required Documentation & Compliance
- Proof of work eligibility (I-9 form)
- Valid Driver’s License/State ID
- Social Security Card or SSN verification
- Background checks including:
- SSN Trace
- County and state criminal checks (7 years)
- Sex Offender Registry
- National Criminal and FACIS 3
- Education verification or diploma/transcripts as placeholder
- State-specific searches (South Carolina Medicaid Excluded Providers)
- Employment application with complete work history and PTO
- Proof of 2 clinical references
- Work history verification for last 3 clinical employers
Certifications & Competencies
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) – AHA only; not required for pediatric units
- BLS – AHA or ARC certification required for all clinical staff
- PALS – Required for all pediatric units except Pediatric OR; preferred for Pediatric OR
- NRP – Must be through AHA/AAP with full eCard and QR code
- TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course) – Required as applicable; not required for ER RNs
- EFM (Electronic Fetal Monitoring) – Required for Labor & Delivery; preferred for Mother/Baby
- Medication/Pharmacology Competency Exam – Required as applicable
- Color Blind Testing – Required prior to start
- Competency Exam – Required
- Tech Certification Verification – NBRC certification for RRT required
- Orientation Safety Manual Acknowledgement (HIPAA Attestation)
Licensing Requirements
- South Carolina RRT license required (primary source verification)
- NURSYS verification for applicable licenses
- IV Therapy certification required for select LPNs (if applicable)
- Radiation badge required for certain specialties (not applicable for RRT)
Health & Immunization Requirements
- Physical exam updated annually, attesting ability to meet job demands
- Fit test for N95 mask within 90 days prior to start, renewed annually
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap vaccine within 10 years or declination form
- Negative TB test (T-spot or Q-Gold) within 90 days or proof of prior positive with chest x-ray
- Annual TB questionnaire
- Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella: Positive titer or vaccination series required; boosters if low titer
- Hepatitis B: Titer, vaccine series, or declination required
- Varicella: Positive titer or vaccination series required; boosters if low titer
- 10-panel drug screen within 90 days of start (no instant tests)
- Seasonal flu vaccine or medical/religious exemption required during flu season (Aug-April)
- COVID-19 vaccination highly preferred; declination form required if not vaccinated
Facility Specific Requirements
- Completion of orientation modules prior to start (approx. 2 hours)
- Clear, passport-style photo for badge (frontal view, business casual attire)
- Upload vaccination records (COVID and flu) into facility system
- First Day Instructions (FDI) provided after clearance
- Sterile Processing Techs have additional physical and lab requirements (not applicable for RRT)
Additional Notes
- All time off requests (RTO) must be submitted with application and approved based on unit needs
- Facility may call off shifts but guarantees minimum hours as stated
- Travelers should be prepared for possible emergency assignments during hurricane season
